Hi, I have just bought an IBM 18SE hard drive, and I'm now looking for a suitable controller. I'm not after the latest state of the art, and have shortlisted the Adaptec 2940u2w and the 3950uw2, although I haven't been able to find the latter listed on the hardware database on the SuSE site. An internet search seems to suggest it would be ok. Does anyone have any comments on the above cards. This is my first SCSI hard disk, I do currently have a SCSI CDRW but the controller isn't upto handling a hard drive. So I'm busy reading up on everything I can get hold of. Thanks in advance Steve
My aha2940u2w is working fine with SuSE.6.4 for 11months now. -Stathis. Stephen wrote:

I too have the 2940U2/W and I can't get SuSE 7.1 to install nor can I get Corel 1.1 or Mandrake 7.0 to install. The kernels are all 2.2x although SuSE offers the 2.4 with the 7.1 distro. All three hang at a point where some mention of the 2940 is the last thing displayed. I'm also running with a Diamond FIRE GL 1000 Pro( with 40 MEG RAM) video card. Some have suggested that my problems could be with this video card although it is given a 3 rating on the LhD list. Any thought(s) as to what might be wrong; controller or video card? dave
You tried this with the version 7.1? What is the message exactly when the SCSI card is detected? Do yo see the drives attached spool up in the message and then the hang or what? What you may try also is to boot from CD2 and type manual at the prompt, it will ask for Yast version and select Yast1.......use the modules disk and try to load the Adaptec SCSI module manual....do not use the Autoload.....if it still hangs note the messages at that screen. I have the 2950U2W connected to a 2.2G ORB drive. Works great, but I'm not booting off of it. Thanks to all who replied. I have settled on the 2940U2W, and am now eagerly awaiting its arrival. Thanks again Steve Stephen wrote:
