kernel update version 2.6.16.21-0.13-default
When I checked for updates today by way of YOU (my zmd is not working), I saw the kernel update on the list and happily clicked the "Accept" button, thinking this might be a fix for some of the minor problems I've been having. After the install, instructions said I would need to re-boot after the install and then install a few modules that might be needed. Re-boot failed: ERROR (15) file not found! I used my installation disc for system rescue, and my login was not accepted. Finally got the system running by going into install and then backing out to "boot from hard drive." Have the system running now, but with no KNetworkManager (or at least no recognition of my Ethernet card), no sound, and according to boot.msg, no modules. message log starts out with: cannot find map file no module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled and a long list of "FATAL:" messages. can someone please tell me; did I do something wrong, was something wrong with the installation source (the one established automatically when I set up "online update"), could this be a bug, and can someone help me out of this mess? I know this may not be as bad as it seems to a newbie, but some help would be much appreciated, --ED--

Hi Ed, Do you remember if the kernel update was the *sole* update selected and applied? IOW, if other updates were also offered as pre-selected, did you uncheck them? This would cause YOU to apply only the kernel update. It's been my experience since at least 8.x that following the above procedure is the only way to avoid complications. Combining kernel updates with other package updates in the same YOU session always seems to lead to trouble, particularly at reboot. Did YOU appear to complete successfully and close? Were you able to visually watch and track it through the final SuSEconfig & ldconfig? Carl

That's not the last update. I have 2.6.16.21-0.21-default for SuSE 10.1; just installed and booted fine an hour ago.
I used my installation disc for system rescue, and my login was not accepted.
Login is "root", not your password.

You probably need to reinstall the kernel using the rpm command, or the previous kernel, perhaps. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. cannot find map file no module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled
and a long list of "FATAL:" messages.
This is normal, since you upgraded your kernel the old modules aren't there anymore, and the "boot installed system" uses the old kernel to boot. It sounds like you have multiple systems installed on this computer, is that right?

Yes, I have a Debian distribution installed on hdb, but only command line. Is there some connection which enabled you to guess this? The systems are on separate drives. --ED--

Is it also using grub? Could it be that that is what is throwing the error message? If it is using grub, what does it say in its menu configuration file?

Yes, and it appears Joe Morris has arrived at a probable solution. Please check his 7:13 A.M. post for details. Just remembered, I forgot to point him toward this, just in case he hasn't seen it already. Thanks, --ED--
