Not sure if the procedure is the same, but I recently moved Kmail from MDK91 to SUSE93 (5 separate upgrades) with the following procedure: 1) Login to a new user on SUSE93 system, but do *NOT* start Kmail. 2) copy ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc from MDK91 system to SUSE93 system. 3) copy all files/folders from ~/Mail from MDK91 system to SUSE93 system. 4) Start Kmail. Kmail on SUSE93 seems to find the mail in Mail folder when started this way; not sure where the mail is stored otherwise. The file copied in step 2 contains contact list and other preferences. Frank

Historically it was in ~/Mail as it was just unix standard mbox format, but since KMail started defaulting to unix standard maildir but writing index files to increase performance in the same dir, it was decided to put the local mail in an app specific dir so that other mailers don't try to open our index files thinking they are mboxen. The new default is ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail, as Carl said. Will

When did/will this change? As have migrated each time, I've always had my mail in ~/Mail. I did look in the dir you mentioned, and there is something there, but definitely not my mail. Can I assume that if mail is found in ~/Mail that's where it will stay? Not that it matters that much, I'm just curious..

Back in KDE 3.4 IIRC.

Yes, it's only new installs that put mail in kmail's apps dir. For KDE4 kmail (and every other PIM app) will use the Akonadi storage, so Akonadi's maildir/box backend will take over the job of touching those files from Kmail, but you shouldn't notice a difference. Will
