Hi all, I was fiddling around with the Openwall kernel patch today on 2.2.14 today and was wondering-- where exactly do you unpack the tarball and what is the syntax of the patch command? I can't figure out where to put the thing to get it to patch properly. What's Openwall? Where do I find it?

Most kernel patches should be placed in /usr/src, right next to the kernel tree. Try the following: For uncompressed patch files: cat patchname.patch | patch -p0 For compressed gz files: zcat cat patchname.patch.gz | patch -p0 For compressed bz2 files: bzcat cat patchname.patch.bz2 | patch -p0 These are just general instructions. Some patches don't work this way, but a lot of them do. AC and pre patches have always worked for me like this. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x121 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Openwall is a kernel patch that helps prevent buffer overflows and other assorted cracker nastiness. It's used *a lot* at the university I work at. You get it at: http://www.openwall.com/linux/ Cheers, Dennis PS-- Someone at work told me how to do the patch today.
