Audio Fails in Some Video Apps for only one user
Here is an odd problem. There are several users (500, 501, .... 504) In all but UID 500, playing mpg files with various player apps works fine. User 500 has the problems (symptoms): There is no audio when using xine. The audio configuration lacks the usual options, and the configuration menu looks like an older version (latest version from xine website installed). With other users xine is OK. Enjoympeg aborts and does not play. MPlayer takes a long time to start playing and an error message pops up to say dev/dsp device in use. But audio plays. I have uninstalled xine, deleted the .xine folders in each user home and reinstalled the rpm. Same result. The problem is most likely not with xine but with an audio component. The KDE Control Center sound settings seem to be the same for each user. The /dev/dsp 's all have group: users. Any suggestions on what to check next, please ? -- John

Check /etc/group and make sure that the user in question is a member of group audio. John S.
