Sorry... didn't mean that to come across too harshly... the distro usually goes onto the ftp site about 1 to 2 months after it's released. If you like the product, it really helps all of us if we all support them... and of course we do that by buying their products. Aloha and Mahalo. - Herman Beau E. Cox wrote:

From what I have been reading on this list, probably nobody should buy it. I know new releases tend to have bugs, but this is a dot release--it should have killed the bugs. I think SuSE screwed up badly, and we should all wait for version 8.2, or just use the 8.0 version for quite a while. --doug
The only REAL problem that has surfaced is with *some* interactions with Java... namely the Java plugin for browsers and a few Java apps that tend to make system calls back to the OS. As everyone else is switching to gcc 3.2 (even Sun now has gcc 3.2 as part of their contrib. packages), I am sure it will be only a short time before the issue of having a JRE/JDK complied with 3.2 is available. Besides this, 8.1 is actually very nice and the fact that it is built with gcc 3.2 offers a lot of performance benefits (3.2 is just a better compiler.) If you really need Java to work... then yes, maybe you should stick with 8.0 for now. Otherwise, there is nothing to hold you back. - Herman Doug McGarrett wrote:

Better yet. If you're selling your distro SOLELY, for $80, don't expect me to pay $80 to be your guinea pig. That's the kind of stuff Mandrake or Red Hat can get away with cause you can burn the discs and then throw it away if it's critically broken. You'd expect better for a distro that's only available by paying $80. Preston

Yeah... smack Ben, not SuSE. :-) I'm kidding Ben. We Bay Area SuSE users gotta stick together. - Herman Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Good question... I wonder how many of us there are? - Herman -- "DRM... Digitally Retarded Media - content that cannot reach its full potential because of artificial restraints."
I counted 6 in the last round of SLE complaints and comments at least. :) * Herman Knief (herman@knief.net) [021008 05:29]: ::> ::Good question... Did you count me Ben? I am in Walnut Creek. I mean I want to be counted as a Bay area SuSE user and not because I complained ;-) BTW, what happened to your clock? Regards, -Kastus

Did a fresh 8.1 install and forgot to copy back my ntp.conf file. oops. I just didn't notice because for the last 4 hours I've been looking out my window at the clock shop across the street. They have a huge clock that I can see. oops again. :) Yes, I counted you..even though you live all the way over on the otherside of the mountain..evil..evil tunnel. ;) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. though I live on the other side of the mountain, I work in San Mateo, and ususally when I drive through the tunnel, there is no traffic there ;-) Like now, I am still at the office ;-) Regards, -Kastus

I replaced the Acer 40x I had with a Creative 52x and the install went off without a hitch...well accept that I'm getting to damn old to go through all those damn packages. *laugh* I think it was also partly because the first round of install put the k_deflt kernel in..while the second install put the k_athlon pkg in. I have a Duron which has the same core as the Athlon which makes sense it would use the k_athlon kernel. I have a fresh install and all seems well. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.
