evolution started to crash in suse 9.3
I've used evolution mail client for all my mail, and it worked ok for a long time. (Suse 9.3 stock, system and KDE fully updated via YOU). Now, it started to crash every time when I try to add new account, at the point where server type has to be chosen (e.g. imap)... I tried to update, with no success. Then, I renamed my evolution folder, in order to hide the user data, then uninstalled and reinstalled program via Yast, again with no success. My account does not exist anymore, so the initial wizzard pops up now every time I start the program, asking me to set up new account. It crashes at the same point as before...It happens whatever the server typ I choose, not only for imap. Is there anybody on the list to give a suggestion what to try next? Remember, program *was* working correctly. Some change in system (and it was out of evolution directory) disturbed it, and I am not aware of which one it could be. All changes to original 9.3 installation were done only by yast and YOU. TIA and best regards, solenoid

Try creating a new user, login to the new user account and see if the same problem exists when adding a new account to evolution in the new user login account. This is to rule out whether or not it is a system/application problem. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

I did it already while waiting for list response. There is the same problem even with the new user! OK, it was not a new user, it existed before, but it's a dummy one, created just for recreating defaults in cases of trouble. Evolution was never used by this user before. Again, the setup wizzard died at the same step... I am really confused with this. Thank you for the answer. Hope that this thread won't die before I get the solution :) ... I relied a lot on evolution. I have long history of my mails archived in local folders... solenoid

Try re-installing evolution again from the DVD/CD. Perhaps something has become corrupted. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Or you might try starting it from the shell to see what error messages you get. Usually makes it easier to track doing that. regards, Lee

I started it and went through first step of setting new account. It crashed at the moment I clicked on IMAP... Here is what I got (some lines are wrapped): 1. After entering "evolution" command: ---------------------------------------- es menu class init adding hook target 'source' (evolution:16382): evolution-mail-WARNING **: couldn't get service : No provider available for protocol `' 2. After entering edit/preferences menu entry: ---------------------------------------- (evolution:16382): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_entry_set_text: assertion `text != NULL' failed (evolution:16382): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_sortable_set_sort_column_id: assertion `GTK_IS_TREE_SORTABLE (sortable)' failed BBDB spinning up... 3. After trying to set incoming mail server type: ---------------------------------------- (evolution:16382): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_entry_set_text: assertion `text != NULL' failed Now, I need help with interpreting these lines! Are they pointing any list members to any solution? TIA again, solenid

I just joined the list. This may have been already suggested: remove the evolution rpms and reinstall them. Also, look if SuSE has posted any updates. I see that 9.3 and it's updates are available on a few mirrors around the 'Net. In one of my SuSE 9.2 installs, evolution would start, everything would be hunky dory and then when I tried to create a new contact it would crash. Removal and reinstall of the rpms solved the problem. What version of Evolution. Did you by chance install any red-carpet packages? I had an identical problem that was caused by mis-matched packages (I believe a test version of glib2 was the culprit). Reverting back to the more 'stable' version addressed my problems. -- Cheers, Trey ---- While money doesn't buy love, it puts you in a great bargaining position. This has been reported as a bug... I had the same thing. I also tried to use Evolution and as soon as you click on the mail server type (while adding a new user) it crashes. I went digging, and found out that loads of people have encountered the same thing. If you go through the bug report thingy that pops open when Evolution crashes, you eventually end up at the Bugzilla for Evolution. I can't remember the bug ID for it... but it's there and been reported several times (lots of duplicated opened and then closed by the developers etc.). So... probably not much you can do but roll back to an older version. Reinstalling from the 9.3 CD doesn't help. It could be related to the gtk version you have installed (via an update?) Not sure on thsi one... just pasing that on some other threads I read while doing my search. C.

I did not google on this problem, just tried to find help on this list only. That's why I did not know about this being reported as bug. After your post, I checked google too, and found out many stories that are same as mine.

I would not bet on gtk. It has to be another update that I made after my installation. I updated by YOU all that was available (also KDE as supplementary), but I checked my system now - gtk was not updated. The latest thing I did was to go through the whole list of evolution dependencies, marking all the entries that were updated to higher (sub)version than the original one from distro DVD. Then, I downgraded all of them to the DVD version status. Unfortunately, the result was unsuccessful again. Great, huh? It looks like the problem was introduced by some secondary dependencies - "dependencies of dependencies"... Thank you for your answer very much. I will give up for now, and monitor for the future evolution updates... Switched to thunderbird already... :) solenoid

I didn't want to try that since I would have to do it on my computer here at work. :-P Can't afford to tinker too much. Annoying that it breaks like that... I have yet to see anyone pin it down to a specific package.

I'm also using Thunderbird on my work computer now (the IT guy switched on IMAP on the Exchange server... ) C.

The problem is in 'glib2' available in KDE repository. I just downdraded it and everythink worked fine again. Miquel.

I don't understand. My Yast shows only original glib2 (and glib2-devel) versions 2.7.0-3... There are no other versions available, nor they were ever updated. Would you be so kind to tell us which package exactly have you downgraded, and from which version to which one? solenoid

YaST may show glib2 versions of 2.7 for installed packages, but the DVD/CD versions are 2.6.3-4.
