I have a P4C800 Asus board with a 160 gb Seagate SATA drive. When I insert the boot disk to do an nfs install of 8.2 It gets all the way to ide device driver while it is loading the kernal and then freezes. It seems to not like that fact that I don't have a regualr ide drive attached. I have gone into bios and told it that SATA is the primary drive. Has anyone had any experience here that could help me or is Suse 8.2 just not capable right now of installing on a computer that only has a SATA drive

Jason,
This is first use of SATA w/ SuSE linux I've heard.
SATA is supposed to be soft/hardware compatible, but
may they never tested it w/ linux.
Will search to see if there is any other info on this
on the web.
Stuart.

I have installed 8.2 on my home computer, on a SATA drive hooked up to the Promise SATA 150Tx2 controller. Had to add the module to the modules disk first. Tried to make a driver update disk, but was unable to make that work. Will 9.0 have support for the Promise SATA controllers BTW? -Torvald

I have 8.2 running on an Intel D875PBZ motherboard with SATA disks. It has the same chipset as your P4C800. 8.2 froze out of the box for me as well, but it runs with a Mantel 2.4.21 kernel. In my case, I was able to bootstrap by first telling the BIOS to present the SATA drive in 'Legacy' mode (i.e. PATA emulation), so 8.2 was able to install. I then upgraded the kernel and tested. Finally, I changed grub, fstab and the BIOS settings for SATA compatibility and rebooted. Cheers, Dave

Intel 865GLC with onboard intel SATA and SATA drive, SuSE 8.2 does not recognise the controller at all. Doesn't even see that there is one. Here's what I did: -Install SuSE 8.2 on another machine with PATA drive. -Compile 2.4.22 vanilla kernel, install and edit grub to show it -stick PATA drive in new machine, boot off it. Kernel should now see and be able to use SATA controller and drive. -make partitions on new drive, copy SuSE over, edit /etc/fstab on the new drive, as well as /boot/grub/menu.lst - you have to add ide=reverse kernel param. - remove PATA drive, boot off SuSE CD. Wait for installer to load, Ctr+Alt+F2 to console, chroot to SuSE partition on new disc - Yast2 - bootloader. Check that all settings are fine and tell it to update the mbr. Well, that's what it came down too - lots of fiddling inbetween to figure out what to do next :-) Hans
