[SLE] Fujitsu hard drives any good?
I need to add a hard drive to a machine, and a local computer store has a good price on some Fujitsu hard drives. I'm kind of a brand conscious consumer though, and wonder what kind of reputation this brand has for reliability. Another store has a good price on some Seagate drives; a little bit more expensive, but not by much. Which has the better reputation? (When I can order what I want, I lean towards IBM or Quantumm. Down here (Panama) I tend to have to buy whatever is available.) Hello, Paul. I have had great success with Fujitsu drives in the past. They used to come with more cache, longer warranties and lower prices than most of the other big boys in this field. I also like IBM drives, and I seem to think that recent years have seen Seagate and Quantum both go through rocky times in terms of reliability, but they seem to have their act together nowadays. My oldest Fujitsu drive (1GB FastSCSI-2) was bought back in 1993, and was only decommissioned last year when it was just too small to still be of any use. It was moved between various machines, all of which travelled extensively for demonstration purposes, and it never gave any hint of problems. No doubt this will spark off another one of the list's religious debates, but you wanted to know if Fujitsu drives are OK because that is what is available. In short, you should find them as good as anything else. Hope that helps, Stuart.

i believe i heard Seagate was getting out of the IDE business. if its scsi, i'd get seagate over fujitsu, if IDE, get fujitsu. the IDE fujitsu's seem to run a tad warmer than the others, but i've only had 2 of them go out on me personally over the last several years, and both of those were dropped. -- ======================================================================== Rocky McGaugh Atipa Linux Solutions Product Development www.atipa.com rocky@smluc.org rmcgaugh@atipa.com ======================================================================== On Thu, 13 Apr 2000, Paul Greene wrote:

I have both a Seagate (Medalist Pro) and a Fujitsu drive in my PC. The Fujitsu is much quieter than the Seagate and only a fraction slower. With the lower price the switch to Fujitsu was a speedy choice. JMO. Koos Pol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S.C. This depends on model which you intend to buy. If you going to buy MPExxxxAH series - yes, they are OK. If you plan to buy MPExxxxAT - I would not recomend them.

Personally I prefer Fujitsu.

But I would recomend to buy only IBM HDD. They are marvellous :) Audrius -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
In one of my PC's I had a Seagate Medalist as IDE-0 but now it's lying on top of my desk as a paperweight (not kidding!). One day it just died on me without warning. My older disk, a Maxtor Diamondmax Plus, on the other hand is still performing without a hitch. I bought another one of those to replace the Seagate and my other PC is also equiped with a Maxtor. The newer ones are also much quieter. After reading Kevin Jackson's reply I'm even more suspicious about Seagate. Personally I'd go for a Maxtor (the Plus series) and if they didn't have those I'd spend my hardearned cash on an IBM. On Thu, 13 Apr 2000, you wrote:
