Refresh Rate Hell (SaX2)
Since having purchased a Geforce FX 5200. my refresh rate has miraculously 'changed' and I can no longer get a GUI. I have tried to use SaX2 to change it, but SaX auto configures my screen to a refresh rate of 74hz which is 14 hz over what it will allow, thus my TFT flashes "Over Range" in my face. Anyone who knows a method of rectifying the problem without starting up the GUI (obvious reason) would be much appreciated. P.S: I will just add that I am using a Natcomp TFT (obscure model :-( )

vi /etc/X11/XF86Config and set the refresh rate of your monitor to 60 So in your Monitor section set the line to VertRefresh 60 and then start X Kind regards, -- Gerhard den Hollander Phone :+31-10.280.1515 ICT manager Direct:+31-10.280.1539 Jason Geosystems BV Fax :+31-10.280.1511 gdenhollander@Fugro-Jason.com POBox 1573 visit us at http://www.Fugro-Jason.com 3000 BN Rotterdam JASON.......#1 in Reservoir Characterization The Netherlands This e-mail and any attachment is/are intended solely for the named addressee(s) and may contain information that is confidential and privileged.

Or even better, edit /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors and add the specs for your 'obscure' TFT, and sax will be able to get it right automatically as well, even if you make other changes. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. being the person to go against the grain (and actually having tried your
nonetheless wonderful suggestions) I took a look on the SuSE (whoops,
SUSE) support site, I discovered the rather dinky -l command line option
for sax2.
Needless to say, it's now all sorted out and everything's working
perfectly and better than before I might add.

Would you mind sharing that info for the rest of us... Thanks. I didn't think it would need explaining but sure: firstly, get into runlevel 3 (init 3) type the command: bash#> sax2 -l SaX2 now starts in 640x480@60hz a low res and a refresh rate that my monitor is friendly with. the configuration screen pops up, the rest is self-explanatory.

Thanks, the reason is to make it a part of the archives, so that people looking for help in this area, can find your "fix" for the problem.. Much appreciated.

man sax2 : it's all in there... :) COMMAND LINE OPTIONS Available command line options are the following: -l Enable low resolution. Allow only the 640x480 reso lution for the graphics setup. This is usefull if the DDC probing of the monitor results in not dis playable resolution values.
