Hi all: What's the difference between the kernels in ftp.suse.com?. I'v got k_deflt-2.4.16-37.i386.rpm, k_i386-2.4.16-35.i386.rpm, k_psmp-2.4.16-37.i386.rpm, k_smp-2.4.16-38.i386.rpm and kernel-source-2.4.16.SuSE-32.i386.rpm from here and I need to know wich's the one that I need. Thank you, Martin.
k_deflt is the default kernel, i think it is pentium optimised. k_i386 is optimised for i386 k_psmp is for pentium smp (dual processor) machines k_smp is for other smp machines kernel-source provides the actual kernel source code in /usr/src/linux - its not normally required. i imagine you want k_deflt, but it depends on your machine and what you want it for? I thought I read somewhere that k_smp was for the modern Pentium processors, and k_psmp was for earlier ones ("p" for previous?). Note this article: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/fhassel_p4.html Peter Taylor

k_deflt : Suse default kernel with pentium (i586) optimisation k_i386 : kernel compiled for i386 arch k_psmp : i don't know :-) k_smp : kernel compiled for multiprocessors support kernel-source : the name says it all, it'is the source of the kernel if you want to compile it yourself ! Francis
