Hi. Have just reinstalled staroffice from the SuSE 6.3 CD's. As a user I can't add my type 1 fonts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1. It just seems to ignore the type1 directory. Root can install use and print all the fonts without trouble. Anyone had the same? Must be to do with permissions but just thought that there maybe a simple solution. Thanks, Steve. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I'm using a version of Star Office that I downloaded from Sun. It includes a couple of items that might not be in the SuSE distribution: the printer administration program spadmin and the installation manual (setup.pdf or something like that). You can use the spadmin program to install Type 1 fonts. Note that the fonts available for printing are, in general, a subset of those available for viewing; to see the difference, open a new HTML document and a new text document and compare the font lists. The installation manual has some instructions on font installation, although they're written in fractured English that is sometimes hard to interpret (e.g., ``You'll only have disposal of the fonts which do make sense for each application.''). But you might be best off to twiddle the SO configuration files directly. For a particular font, you need to have the .afm (Adobe Font Metrics) file in: Office51/xp3/fontmetrics/afm The fonts available for the printer are listed in: Office51/xp3/ppds/SGENPRT.PS (or a similarly located file if you're using a different printer than the default). Finally, the .pfb or .pfa files for the screen fonts are found in: Office51/xp3/pssoftfonts You should use the fonts already listed there as a model for what you need to insert. All this assumes that the fonts are available to X. You can use the gfontview program to check that. I'm afraid that this is not correct. We're both right. The fonts are listed in both places. Why, I don't know. Paul Abrahams -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

basicly font *display* they must be printable either by "printers default" or font d/l to the printer. (those not listed in SGENPRT.PS will be d/l). That means, the *.pfb files must be handy. Juergen

Agreed. This condition must be met too, since the actual data for the d/l fonts comes from the .pfb files. On Tue, May 16, 2000 at 07:12:35AM +0200, juergen.braukmann@ruhr-west.de wrote:

Yes, we are both right to some extent. In the PPD files are listed the "hard" fonts, those which are available within the printer itself, whether it is a postscript printer or not. But this information is not used by StarOffice. It may be, however, used automatically by the printer if it asked to print a file which does not have the font data embedded in it. This will happen if the font used in the file is not correctly listed in xp3/psstd.fonts and/or if there is not a correct correspondence between this file and the ghostscript fontmap (when ghostscript is used). If the printer knows Postscript, it may be driven directly by Staroffice, using a file in xp3/ppds adapted to that printer. However the more general solution is to go through ghostscript ; this offers the possibility of printing the TrueType fonts too. I don't know how to make use of a PCL printer (some of which have PPD files in xp3/ppds) directly, without the help of ghostscript. That is, I tried with my IBM4039 PCL printer and it did not work, on the other hand, using ghostscript I can print on it perfectly. On Mon, May 15, 2000 at 05:07:03PM -0400, Paul W. Abrahams wrote:

Hi everyone I can confirm that copies exist in both places. In the end I used spadmin with the fonts in a directory I had permissions on. I didn't like the idea of changing write permissions in the X11 directory. I must be lucky. All the Type1's I've installed so far print correctly too. (I'm using the ones from the CorelDraw CD's) Thanks, Steve

I think there is a chance to install "personal" fonts, since some of these files appear in the personal SO dir as well. i.e. the xp3 dir in ~home/Office51a Juergen Juergen -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
