Steve,
I have had success with the SMC 8040TX 10/100 pcmcia card working
quite well under SuSe 7.3. The only thing I had to do was change the
config file to have it bind pcnet_cs instead of axnet_cs. Now I have
not tried it under SuSe 8.0, just having gotten around to updating it
yet, but I would be willing to be it works. It is easily recognized
by the kernel and does run @ 100 mbps.
Best Regards,
Keith B.

Hi We want to put a notebook into our 8.0 served lan from time to time. I can't find anything in the docs to point to how I can stick a RJ45 cable from our hub into a notebook. Is it the pcmcia stuff? Thanks in advance, could save me a lot of reading. Steve.

I faced this problem with my IBM ThinkPad iSeries 1200, which does not have an ethernet port. I did try one PCMCIA card, which didn't work, and I also don't like the fact that these cards tend to run hot. Salvation came in the form of a USB-to-ethernet adaptor. Mine is a D-Link DU-E100, which is smaller than a pack of cigarettes and weighs almost nothing. I'd have to check my laptop (I'm at the desktop right now) to see what driver it used, but it was an easy thing to configure. So if your laptop has USB ports, you might want to consider it. regards, Robert in sunny, polluted Taiwan
