SuSE 9.0 problems w/X freezing
Just completed a network install of SuSE 9.0 which I thought went without a hitch, but I can barely use X as it freezes within minutes each time I start it up. I used SuSE 8.2 on the same machine and had basically no probs with my video hardware setup (NVidia TNT2 32mb) w/3D acceleration. Now I can't even get Sax2 to stay up long enough (before X freezes) to try some different settings, and I don't know much about editing the XFConfig file except that it seams I need to run SuSEconfig after making any changes. Without ssh'ing into the box to kill X, I'm willing to bet that the kernel is still purring along in the background because I did have one 3D accelerated game (Marble Blast) that would bring X (under 8.2) to its knees. I could kill X after ssh'ing in, but I couldn't get my screen back. <reboot> I did have a peek at /var/log/XFree86.0.log, but I can't see any errors logged (not sure exactly what to look for all the same). Any suggestions? Thanks for reading my garble! Eric Pierce __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing. http://photos.yahoo.com/

... the only tool i use is 'xf86config' - gather the info about your keyboard/mouse/video card/& monitor (including the horiz and vert ranges) and execute 'xf86config'. after this, ensure you install the nvidia driver. -- /// Michael J. Eric, A couple of things to consider. Did you do an online update with YOU after installing SuSE 9.0? If not, you should as there are some XFree86 files awaiting you. Some folks installing 9.0 had these same type problems after installing and failing to do the update files. I suspect it affects certain hardware though, as not everyone had the problem. You will also be able to get and/or update your Nvidia drivers doing the update. The next thing, remove your present /etc/X11/XF86Config file, so sax2 has the opportunity to create a new file and start fresh. Usually it is best to boot to only runlevel 3 or init 3 to do these things. Stay out of X when adjusting the graphics, it just seems to work better when having problems. At the GRUB screen, just type "init 3" to only boot to the terminal. No need to run SuSEconfig after making manual changes to the XF86Config file, not sure where you got that from. You might also want to search the mail list archives for more info other users already contributed on this matter. And of course, the SuSE manuals sometimes provide some very useful info. I believe I did that during the install, but it wasn't
able to connect to the default ftp link.
Anyhow, I just tried it now (successfully), but there
were only 2 updates: the Microsoft TTFonts & the
Nvidia driver.
I already installed the Nvidia driver off their
website to see if that would take care of the problem,
but it didn't.
I tried everything else you mentioned (boot to
runlevel 3 and I deleted XFConfig - Sax2 and/or X
still freezes). I have yet to dig around the mailing
list. I'll do that next. I also am bugging the local
LUG too. One guy seems to think an IRQ conflict.
That might be it - I seem to remember having a sound
card IRQ conflict a while back, and it would crash
kinda randomly like this.
Thanks for writing... any other suggestions would be
more than welcome.
