Fixed!! Conflicts with on-board and sound card; no sound from music CDs, etc.
Tony, Mikus, and all who were so helpful.... All of our sound problems are solved. :o) 1) I reinstalled and configured the Turtle Beach sound card and did not configure the on-board sound chip. 2) Plugged the DVD burner into the sound card's "CD" input. Plugged the CD player into the sound card's "Aux in" input. 3) Opened KSCD and told it to look at the DVD player. Music CDs played just fine as we knew they would with KSCD. Until such time as we're able to figure out how to get XMMS to recognize music CDs we'll just leave this as-is and continue with KSCD. 4) It took a little exploring to get the CD to play, however. After going into the settings in KSCD and telling it to look at the CD player rather than the DVD burner we could not get sound. KSCD was reading the CD tracks, but no sound was coming out of the speakers. So, I had a brainstorm and had my wife open KMix. I looked at the settings and noticed that the slider levels for "aux" were at the bottom, and the little green light at the top of the sliders was off. Ah, hah!! She pushed up the sliders and lit the little green light and, voila!! Music!! :o) Such a simple solution. Why did it take me so long to think of looking there? ;o) Another point of interest.... We disabled the on-board chip in the BIOS. However, SuSE still sees the on-board and offers it as an available sound option. So it seems as if the BIOS disabled setting really did not disable. At this point we have not tried to disable the on-board chip using the Mobo jumper, and unless anyone knows that it makes a significant difference we'll just leave it as-is. Our only unresolved issue now is getting XMMS to recognize music CD files so that we can play music CDs from one or both units using XMMS rather than the less powerful KSCD. Thanks again to all who were so kind to help me figure this one out.
