[opensuse] 12.3: yast2 *removes* apps when told not to upgrade them?
Did a small update using yast2 to see if there were any updates missed by zypper, because sometimes there are. In this case, there were several updates to ffmpeg with a vendor change. Yast2 complained about vendor changes to the newer versions, never warning that it was about to remove the installed packages. I told it to not upgrade anything. It went ahead and installed a new, unrelated package and then removed all the ffmpeg and related packages. This kind of theing happened before in 12.3 and I had to reinstall the removed packages. What is going on? I don't recall it behaving this way before 12.3. jd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you are in YOU (YaST online Update), looking at patches, and he was not, you can click on the particular patch and disable it. Of course, it will be offered the next time you run YOU. But this can not be the case, because there can not be ffmpeg /patches/, as opensuse.org does not supply that package; thus it can not come from the update repo, and YOU can thus not see it. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. TABOO was not selected for these packages. But come to think of it, Yast and YOU have not been showing any of the TABOO packages lately, either. Well, I reckon I'll just start over and see what happens next time. Not too fond of having to closely supervise automation but nothing else to do about it. jd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I never trust automatic updates. I've been bitten before... - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Whoa. Where from? Because opensuse.org does not supply that package. It has to come from packman or videolan. And vendor changes are not allowed automatically for good reasons, unless you actively change that behaviour. I'm looking in YaST right now, and I see no updates to ffmpeg at all.
Yast2 complained about vendor changes to the newer versions, never warning that it was about to remove the installed packages. I told it to not upgrade anything. It went ahead and installed a new, unrelated package and then removed all the ffmpeg and related packages.
There is a tab in yast where you can see what it is actually going to do, package by package.

Oh, yes, it has. You have to be very careful what you tell it to do and how. For instance, if it tells you of a package conflict, makes two or three proposals, and you press ESC with the idea of thinking about it later, it decides for you, some times with disastrous results. When you see this, you have to abort completely and restart yast package manager. Or not. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
