I've installed and configured samba but can't seem to access the win boxes on my network and don't seem to be able to access the winboxes from the linux box. I can't seem to find the tools for checking samba status and would like to use LinNeighbourhood but can't find it on the CD's. Can anyone help? Which version of SUSE are you using? LinNeighborhood was on the SUSE 7.3 Pro
CD's. SAMBA is not easy to deal with, but I have received a number of good
pointers on the list:
Firstly, are you sure you have installed Samba (including smbclient?). Do
rpm -qa | grep samba
to find out.
Second, is the smbfs module loaded. Find out by doing
lsmod
If it is not, (as root) do
modprobe smbfs
to load it. I think you need to add a line to
/etc/init.d/boot.local
to do this automatically at boot, but others here will be more knowledgeable
on this.
Thirdly, make smbmnt and smbumount suid root, so that ordinary users can use
them. As root, do
chmod 4755 /usr/bin/smbmnt
chmod 4755 /usr/bin/smbumount
I am sure there are some security implications in this (which others may
perhaps be kind enough to point out), but it may be sensible to get the thing
working first and then worry about them.
Fourthly, ensure that there are shared resources on the Windows (I am
assuming 98) machines. You may have done this already, but if you have not,
you need to add the File Sharing for MS Networks service via
right-click/Properties/Add on the Network Neighbourhood icon. Ensure that
all Win PCs are in the same workgroup, and that the name (Identification tab)
is proper (ie no weird characters like periods). Then, via the My Computer
icon, right-click the resource you want to share (eg C:), and select Sharing.
Give it a name and description, and decide on whether you want to give full
or read-only access.
Fifthly, try pinging from each computer to all others. If this does not
work, there is something wrong at a base level, and nothing else will work.
Ensure that all Win PCs can see the shared resources of all others - if this
does not work, there is something wrong with your Windows setup, which will
need to be sorted out before you try browsing via Samba.
Now, open LinNeighbourhood. Click on Options/Browse entire network. In the
popup box, you should be the user (greyed out). (If you are not, tick the
Browse as user box, and enter your username and password. Then untick the
box.) Click on OK.
Give it a few seconds, particularly if you have just made changes to your Win
PCs - it can take up to 10 minutes for changes made to a Win network to
propagate. But you should eventually end up with a nested hierarchy in the
left-hand panel, with your machine at the top. Below it there is a network
(perhaps called TUX-NET) which will have entries for the Linux machines on
which Samba is installed (so your machine should also appear here). Below
that there is another network (perhaps called WORKGROUP). This should
consist of your Windows PCs. If it does not, try doubleclicking on the
entry. Each PC entry should have a + next to it, and if you click on that
you should see the shares you established earlier. Doubleclick on one, click
Mount, and LN should mount it at your chosen point, and open Konq to display

From this SuSE box I can ping the IP address of all systems on the LAN. I can also ping the IP address of this SuSE box but I cannot ping its name noe see it in the Network Neighbourhood of any windows system. I've not tried

I am in the middle of configuring Samba with one LInux box (mine) and one Win98 box (my wifes). I currently have no problem mounting her hard drive on my Linux box, I can see her machine in LinNeighborhood etc. The problem is I can't get her MY machine to appear in Network Neighborhood on HER machine. When i first was playing with this a few weeks ago I could see my machine but when I tried to log onto it a password was requested and I could not figure out what passward was wanted. I tried all that I knew for both machines with no result. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The networking works fine both ways when I am running Win98 on both machines so all the basics are fine. This is just a fine tuning matter I think. I am running Suse 8.0. Scott

I will add to my last message. The reason that my wife's Win98 box could not see my linux box was that smbd and nmbd were not running (how do you set these to start at system startup, I know I could put them in boot.local but I think there is a more elegant way?) Now I am left with the previous problem. When I try to access my machine (abyss) from hers I get a requester that says: You must supply a password to make the connection: \\ABYSS\IPC$ I have tried all passords I can think of and none work. Any ideas? I am so close. Scott

I recently got this working... You have to create a user account on the Linux box. I found that the user name on the win98 box needed to be the same as the win98 System name and user name on the Linux box. The user password under Linux should also be the same as the user password on Win98 system. Regards pab -----Original Message----- From: J. You have to have the same username (but there are option to allow mapping username to a different local user of the unix system), you do not have to have the same password at all. Praise

I got it to work eventually, but I changed so many things, I'm still not sure which one fixed the password problem you describe. Here's an excerpt from my "SOLVED" message on suse-linux-e from 5/1/02. I was mainly trying to print across the network, but I got file sharing too. Your password problem is likely solved by what I discuss below. You need Windows passwords (See control panel: users) and you need a username on the linux box with the same exact name as each Win computer username. Then within SWAT (see below) you also have to do a song and dance (a samba dance!) that creates samba users and enables them. One last thing, I never seemed to get it to work until I set up a WINS server, not that I even really know what that means. If you read the below and follow the directions in the link to the letter, I believe it will work. - --- Install samba. Edit /etc/inetd.conf to uncomment the line that says: ~ swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/swat swat Edit /etc/hosts.allow to contain: ~ swat: 127.0.0.1 192.168.0. if like me, you want any local computer (192.168.0.x) to be able to access SWAT. Type http://localhost:901 into a web browser. Use swat to set up things. I'll include my smb.conf as an attachment to show you how I set up my printer and a couple of shared directories. You can also follow the same advice I did from http://plug.phoenix.az.us/step-by-step/samba/toc.html which is and old but still useful "Samba Server Step-by-Step Guide". The one thing he doesn't tell you in that guide is to go to SWAT's passwords section and create a samba user for each client computer. You'll have to have a linux user on the server for each of these computers too. Then I made sure my windows computers were actually using the same user names and passwords for logging into windows (control panel:users) and then finally in swat click on ENABLE USER for each user you've created. After that the server computer showed up in Network Neighborhood and I could set up a network printer in Windows with the settings:printer:wizard thingy. J. Finally working. One thing that helped, I really don't know why at this point, was changing security from USER to SHARE. That allowed me to open the share on the linux box. I also had to revert to password encrypted. My only problem now is that when I print from the Win98 box to the laser on my linux box the printing works fine but the printer keeps spewing out blank pages endlessly after the job. MOST annoying. Printing under linux leaves much to be desired and I have to say it worked better for my prior to 7.2. I still am having printing too close the the top of the page and other problems. Oh well. Scott

Have you applied the "Win98 Samba Registry Patch" for unencrypted passwords ? Granted, not the most secure method, but for a small home network, who cares ? Jon

It is excellent. Maybe more than you wanted to know about Samba. BTW, Samba 3.0 coming out fairly soon. LinNeighborhood was easier to set up in 7.3, 8.0 took more work. Make sure all Win devices are set up shared. RCT
