Hello everyone, I'm about to take the leap into 11.1; Is it true that I can no longer boot from an XFS partition? Has this been cut out of the kernel? Does anyone have any info on this? Don't know about *true*, but highly suggested. It has been commented that the "boot" partition should be a non-complex filesystem such as ext2 soas not to introduce potential boot problems.

I'm glad that you have a tongue-in-cheek above because as far as I am concerned it is NOT a good move to go to 11.1. I've been playing with it over the past couple of hours and on the second reboot I had to do a e2fsck on the installation because the filesystem was corrupted. Even as I type this (using Thunderbird) my typing gets frozen for some seconds before I can continue typing. Also, I use xine for DVD and digital TV viewing (also use kaffeine for same) but one essential component for xine is missing in 11.1 and one therefore cannot install xine-ui.

We're talking here a new, fresh, 32-bit (no, not 35-bit :-) ) install. xine-ui would not install because of a dependency error which was that, "Nothing provideslibnvtvsimple.so.0" which is needed by xine-ui. libnvtvsimple I found out by going over to my 11.0 installation is provided by libnvtv which is nowhere to be found in the 11.1 files/repos. I had to install it from the 11.0 version after which xine-ui installed and is now working correctly. Hi Basil, I just searched for libnvtvsimple.so.0 and found it in my 11.1 rc1 repo ftp://ftp.is.co.za/mirror/opensuse/distribution/11.1-RC1/repo/oss but you're right its not in main oss repo. I mentioned this one some time ago- apart from w32codec it appears that one also now needs libxine1-codecs. Install this and see if this resolves your problem. Basil, You should have stuck with the kde3 install ;-) I had to run boot the 11.1 box just to make sure mine wasn't corrupted as well. Thankfully not problems at all. I have 11.1 with xfs and it has never been a problem. You have to install grub in the mbr as xfs uses too much of the first sector on the drive to allow grub. If you don't want any problems with your install create a small boot partition of ext3 but if you upgrade an xfs partition and know what you're doing you shouldn't have a problem. Depending on how you do it, it works sometimes ;) A separate /boot partition ensures that it works always. Wouldn't ext2 be better for /boot? It is not a kernel problem. But yes, it is correct, you should not install grub on an xfs partition. It /might/ work, but it may well not.

It may work, but it may not. 1st stage needs to contain the block numbers of the filesystem driver, which may be a problem with XFS. ++- So, /boot directory can not be contained inside an XFS partition, even if grub is in the MBR.
