off topic-hdd problem while setting up suse 8.2
hi guys and gals, my hdd is 80gb maxtor, three months ago, i partitioned it to four different areas via msdos fdisk. i set up dual boot on it win xp and suse 8.2. now, i cant use it because some unknown errors dont let me use it as usual. boot log says, an uncorrectable error on hda1, so i decided to erase all disk and set up suse 8.2 but partion table couldnt be changed, error message says, hda1 is only readable, you cant delete or add partition on hda1 because suse's partion manager doestnt recognize some sectors or other areas but i see my previous partition table as it is. what could i do to fix my hard disk for using my hard disk as past. every comment is welcome...

Doesn't Maxtor ship their drives with a low level format program on floppy? -- If we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom. -- Samuel Adams
not, nothing i have with my maxtor.
i found a tiny dos program makes low level format
"disk patch" but it runs as demo, need password to do it really..

That comes only with retail packages. You have to download it from Maxtor's web site if you can find it there, or get it and much much more from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ -- "I place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared." You appear to be trying to partition a partition (hda1). You need to run fdisk on /dev/hda. First I would try to fsck the partition giving you problems and see it that fixes the problem. Ken
