I am aware that I on my SuSE Linux 7.3 system can issue 'rpm -q PROGRAMNAME' and get the precise package name/version for a program that is installed on the system. What if I wish to find out which package 'info' belongs to if 'info' is not installed? I have recently made an installation on a laptop system with the 'Minimum Installation' option taken. The 'info' program is not installed with this option. I have tried mounting the DVD medium and issuing 'cd /dvd; find . -name info' which gives me nothing useful. Searching for 'info' from YaST's Package Management->Package Information->F9 shows me a lot of packages but I cannot find out which one (if any) contains the 'info' program. Can anyone help me on this? Thanks in advance. Best regards, David List

Thank you, that helped. Do you know of any way to have rpm search the installation medium as in my case, when it's about an uninstalled package? Best regards, David List

apt-file... Well this is very new, at least for us SuSE users... However, it shows the latest available contents of the subscribes apt server(s) (the only one providing this possibility is the gwdg.de server) It is actually similar to grepping the ARCHIVES file that comes with SuSE release, but that one gets out of the date. This method gives you up to date information How does it work: apt-file update (to synch your local database with the server) apt-file search info Because "info" is rather "general" the result is a big list: 3ddiag aaa_base aaa_dir aalib afterstp alice <skip> qt3-devel-tutorial abiword ggv gnome-libs gnome-spell libgtop librep-devel orbit-devel sawfish usermode So we do a search on "bin/info", this gives:
apt-file search bin/info texinfo
apt-file list texinfo texinfo sbin/install-info texinfo usr/bin/info texinfo usr/bin/install-info <skip> texinfo usr/share/man/man1/texindex.1.gz texinfo usr/share/man/man5/info.5.gz texinfo usr/share/man/man5/texinfo.5.gz
How to obtain "apt-file"? It's simple if you have apt installed already: apt-get install apt-file :) Can you use apt-file even if you don't use apt? Yes, you can apt-file is not dependend on apt! -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

ARCHIVES.gz holds the names of all of the packages present on the SuSE cd's. 'pin' will query ARCHIVES.gs and tell you which disk and the full package name of the package you are searching for. The suggestions I presented are usable and correct in your situation. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org

Install pin.rpm. pin searches the index on the CD/DVD. Philipp

YaST1 have a feature that can do that. Look at YaST2 and see if there is a similiar feature. Charles -- Sigh. I like to think it's just the Linux people who want to be on the "leading edge" so bad they walk right off the precipice. (Craig E. Groeschel)

No, YaST1 does not have such a function. YaST1 has a function that lets you *search* for packages, given a search string. That did'nt help me much here. Thank you for your answer. Best regards, David List

Yes it does, I use it all the time. You should: (1) Choose/Install Packages ==> Package Information (2) You should either have either put a SuSE CD into the cdrom drive before starting YaST1 or you can put it in now and press F9. (3) Now check "Search Install Media" and check or uncheck the other options depending what you waht to do. (4) Enter filename you are looking for and press enter to start the search. You can also press F1 to get help on advanced search patterns. Charles -- "Whip me. Beat me. Make me maintain AIX." (By Stephan Zielinski)
