Suse and SATA on Dell Optiplex gx280
Hi, I'll be getting a Dell Optiplex gx280 and I plan to install Suse on that box. The box comes with SATA. Has anyone succesfully install Suse on that box, and what version that you tried? Currently our department has locally mirrored 9.1 so I'll try to install 9.1. Sadly, SATA isn't "solid" in 9.1 nor 9.2. Fred -- "As Internet technology itself vaults into new areas, so too does the Microsoft monopoly and its tried-and-true bag of tricks." -US Senator Orrin Hatch, (R) Utah

Is this true for SATA on ALL motherboards? I'm on the virge of building a couple of new boxes, and I was looking at mobos with SATA RAID. If it's unstable, I'll forgo the expense, and get a non-SATA mobo. Thanks in advance for any insights on this. -Ric

Well, in my case I'm not going to build RAID with the SATA, only 1 HD (80 GB I believe) is plugged, plus a CD-RW/DVD combo. Regards, Verdi -- +++ Sparen Sie mit GMX DSL +++ http://www.gmx.net/de/go/dsl AKTION fr Wechsler: DSL-Tarife ab 3,99 EUR/Monat + Startguthaben

Tyan support is good, from what I understand. My next box will be a new Tyan MOB. There are some others here who have some experience with it as well. One of the advantages with Tyan is the exceptional quality......cost more, but certainly FAR better than Asus and others. That depends on the controller. Check http://linux.yyz.us/sata for the various driver status. I loaded 9.1 on a dell box with some or other SATA Raid controller configured for raid-5 with 5 discs. Can't remember the controller and I don't have access to that box anymore, so I can't check. But it did pick it up first time and install without a problem, and it's been running smoothly since. -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za

As I said, it's not "solid" yet. I'd be very carefull before buying to make certain there's not going to be a problem. Fred -- The only bug free software from MickySoft is still shrink-wrapped in their warehouse..."
Well, I tried 9.1 and it failed to detect the network card (Broadcom NetExtreme 57xx), eventhough the module bcm5700 is there and loaded. So I'll just wait for 9.2 and see if things have improved. Meanwhile, I'll have to content with FC3 at the moment. Regards, Verdi -- +++ Sparen Sie mit GMX DSL +++ http://www.gmx.net/de/go/dsl AKTION fr Wechsler: DSL-Tarife ab 3,99 EUR/Monat + Startguthaben

For what it is worth... 9.0 has been gold for me on an HP/Compaq d530 Bus 0, device 31, function 1: IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controller (rev 2). IRQ 5. As the subject said, installed. No hiccups during installation, all devices detected and worked without having to go to command line (in- or post-installation). This is the most polished version (compared 7.2, 8.0, 8.2, and 9.0) I've ever installed (well, ok, I haven't tried the DVD playback and burning, so we'll see if both also work correctly...). SATA and the network card (Broadcom Netgear 57xx) are both detected. Now, how do I know if SATA is working with its full performance (dma etc.), because hdparm can't report such status of /dev/sda. One last thing: I get warning "can't find module hw_random.ko" during bootup, but in the kernel-modules subdirectory, the file hw_random.ko exists? Regards, Verdi

I get a similar warning on an older machine but the warning is not about being unable to find the module hw_random.ko. Instead the warning is about being unable to find the hardware random number generator that hw_random.ko supports. I assume the machine does not have such a thing .. Are you sure that it cannot find hw_random.ko ? See /usr/src/linux/Documentation/hw_random.txt. Hmm, you're right. I didn't pay attention in detail to the message; I thought the system simply couldn't find the module. Here's the error message from /var/log/boot.msg: modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting hw_random (/lib/modules/2.6.8-24.10-smp/kernel/drivers/char/hw_random.ko): No such device Do you know exactly what hardware it's looking for? No I have only just noticed this and have not investigated further. Paul H -- Paul Hewlett (Linux #359543) Email:`echo az.oc.evitcaten@ttelweh | rev` Tel: +27 21 852 8812 Cel: +27 72 719 2725 Fax: +27 86 672 0563 --
