I'm about to buy my first digital camera. Are there any linux specific issues I need to consider when choosing a camera? For example do they all work with linux? I'm using SuSE 9.1 if that makes any difference. Steve

Steve, contact me off list for your requirements. That is, the type of images you will capture, size of prints, etc. Fred -- "Ballmer is no more designed for the art of persuasion than the Abrams tank is for delivering meals on wheels."

There should be some kind of 'Hardware Compatibility List' somewhere on www.suse.{de,com}... Perhaps there is your answer? Cheers, Leen

Get a memory card-reader and they *all* become compatable. The card-reader becomes the same as a usb connected hard-drive. If you have usb2 available on your computer, by all means, get a usb2 reader. The difference in speed is *significant*. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

Any camera that appears as a USB attached hard drive, should be OK. I've got an HP Photosmart 320 that works well with Linux.

I've have used both a canon 10d and canon G3 with suse 9.0 and they both work fine. I use digikam to manage and download my pics. You can go into Digikam's camera setup and see which cameras are supported. The only real problem I've had is converting raw files in linux. Chip

As far as I know, digikam is a frontend to gphoto2.

What's wrong with dcraw and the RAW plugin in 0.6+ versions of Digikam? Or have you got a weird camera? -- Steve Boddy

There are 2 RAW "importers" available.....work fine. Fred -- "Ballmer is no more designed for the art of persuasion than the Abrams tank is for delivering meals on wheels."

Nope, cameras are fine. I have used dcraw and didn't like it---was not pleased with the output. I much prefer to use BreezeBrowser to process raw files. Gives lots of options I like to use, including linear conversion, manually setting color temp, noise reduction, exposure compensation, etc. Chip

Then you need to look at the rawphoto plug-in for the Gimp: Raw photo loader plugin for The GIMP by Pavel T. I'll file attach the plugin to you. As root, put it in /opt/gnome/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins, then restart Gimp. Fred -- "Ballmer is no more designed for the art of persuasion than the Abrams tank is for delivering meals on wheels."

Gotta love these communities. Originally I struggled like hell to find dcraw for my S2 Pro, and while I find the digikam plugin useful, I'm not entirely satisfied with the extra steps involved getting it into an editor. Now someone shows me a plugin that looks to do it even better, and manages to integrate with gimp direct. Cool! -- Steve Boddy

I sent the plugin to you as private cover.....did you get it? Fred -- "Ballmer is no more designed for the art of persuasion than the Abrams tank is for delivering meals on wheels."

Errr... No. But why send it in the first place? The link is in one of the parents. I don't mean to be unfriendly Fred, but I don't know you from Adam, and you're sending me plugins I didn't request?!? Or did you misunderstand my post? Slightly puzzled. -- Steve Boddy

Nowadays most can mount as a hard drive. However, my personal preference is to use a card reader, thereby allowing me to use any camera I wish without needing to check compatibility. You could use an external card reader, asi there is no problem for recognizing the reader. Some cameras are not automatically recognized by the system as a USB hard drive, espescially the expensive ones ( reflex cameras i.e. Canon 300D, ...). A 6-in-one Card Reader is not very expensive and it works without any mounting or configuring. laurent -- Linux is like an indian tent: no Windows, no Gates and an Apache inside
