[SLE] Fw: [SLE] ZDNet: News: Linux vs. Linux

Unfortunantly the posting above is the kind of thinking that killed off Unix
in the commercial marketplace... but on to my main thought on the article.
Why is this a suprise? The reason many of us use SuSE is because it is a
version of Linux that works. Forking has existed from the first time someone
wrote a different interface to the kernel. The kernel itself may remain the
same but users don't do rel work with the kernel. It's stability allows them
to do real work with applications written on top of the kernel. If those
applications are not standard (and they aren't in the Linux world) then
confusion will result. There wasn't a whole lot of difference between the
implementations of Unix that normal users would ever come in contact with,
but it was enough to sink the ship. The same logic (or lack of it) is being
applied to Linux without learning the lessons from the past.
While I believe strong competition for Microsoft is a good thing, I'm not
sure I would want to give up my working SuSE system to have a "standardized"
RedHat system. I've been there, and it sucked.
