Local printers not working under 8.1
Hello I have now three workstations running Suse 8.1 i386 in which only in one printing works, maybe becouse it prints to a remote CUPS server that is running under Suse 7.3. The other two punks only prints Yast2 test page, nothing more. The other has HP Deskjet 563C connected by USB the the other Brother MFC-9050 through /dev/lp0 WHen trying to print through CUPS, it prints fine and goes through the queue, gs runs for a while and so, but nothing comes out of the printer. I have not been able to get any updates to these two as they are behind 56k modem line and unless I known exactly which packges to download, I will not do so. Any idea how to proceed? -- --Jyry Öräcle häisee Gräsantörmässä omine ständärdeineen. C:-( C:-/ C========8-O C8-/ C:-(

Sounds like the problem I had with CUPS. What do you get from 'lpstat -p'? I found that the CUPS system wouldn't work on my setup and installed LPRng from the DVD instead, after which I've had no problems. Thanks for your answer. Now, at the box with USB+HP DJ 563C, lpstat -p informs (at the moment) me that the device is not being present, which is not very true - something silly, but I can't see any problems, really. CUPS worked fine in this box with 8.0, but not now, with 8.1. :-(((( --Jyry C:-( C:-/ C========8-O C8-/ C:-(

Hmmm. I had similar odd errors from CUPS. In my case, it was fine when I printed test pages or sent text files to the printer with 'lpr -PlP /etc/hosts', but after I used AbiWord or CrossoverOffice to print, lpstat -p reported that the printer wasn't available. I gave up eventually and installed LPRng, as I said. I don't know what else I can suggest, though :-( John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Knossos: escape the ever-changing labyrinth before the Minotaur catches you!

Firstly have you examined the log files under /var/log/cups/ ? That is the first port of call when you have problems with CUPS. Sometimes it maybe necessary to increase the debug level in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf When debugging a problem it is best to either remove/rename the existing log files. Then restart cupsd and then submit a print job and look at the log files to see what the problem is. Be warned that on the higher debug levels a very large log file will be generated making it difficiult to see the wood for the trees. Hi, Just a another thought have you configured your machine name in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf I would suggest you try localhost as a starting point.. e.g. ######## ######## Server Identity ######## # # ServerName: the hostname of your server, as advertised to the world. # By default CUPS will use the hostname of the system. # # To set the default server used by clients, see the client.conf file. # #ServerName myhost.domain.com ServerName localhost -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------
Both misbehaving boxes now prints without a problem, for now that is... The one with Brother MFS-9050 through /dec/lp0 was solved when I removed the printer in Yast2, and reinstalled the printing system through advanced settings in printer setup. USB Deskjet started to work fine when I managed to get all the Suse 8.1 updates to a CD. Thank you all who answered and helped ruling out many possible reasons for bad printing experience :-) --jq On Thu, 14 Nov 2002, Graham Smith wrote:
