[S.u.S.E. Linux] Sendmail: how to change my 'from' mail address?
While trying to set up mutt as my mailer I ran into a problem I don't have with Netscape (since they don't use sendmail). I am trying to set my from line to say 'to.avi@usa.net' (which is my virtual e-mail address) rather then whatever sendmail tries to stick in there. My user name on my machine is 'avi'. I followed the instructions in the SDB and 1) set the FROM_HEADER in rc.config to FROM_HEADER="usa.net" and executed SuSEconfig. 2) set the /etc/mail/genericstable to contain the (only) line avi to.avi@usa.net and executed SuSEconfig. 3) restarted sendmail This doesn't seem to work. My mail messages still show:

Try this in your ~/.muttrc:

unset use_domain Ciao, Stefan
Stefan, This worked great with mutt, thank you! Now I am looking for a more general way to do it with sendmail, just in case one day I decide to use a different mailer that doesn't make it so easy. ;-) Avi -- Windows 98 supports real multitasking - it can boot and crash simultaneously ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Avi Schwartz to.avi@usa.net - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

You'll have to edit /etc/mail/genericstable. Add a line like this: your_local_login your_email_address e. g.: avi to.avi@usa.net Then do (as root) /usr/sbin/makemap hash -f genericstable.db

Ciao, Stefan
This one worked but I had to make one change. When I used -f, the
translation of the e-mail address didn't occur. Once I remove -f, i.e.:
makemap hash genericstable.db

Wow! `FEATURE(genericstable)' is of course right appropriate to transform the sender's address. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Eg. Gnus up to 5.6.29 doesn't, but I have found out where to patch message.el, so that it does that kind of thing for me. But it hasn't found acceptance in the Gnus community. It is still an open issue, where and when mail header forging is to be allowed / wished. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
