Firefox profile not working on a vfat partition. Permissions I think.
Hi, I've installed openSuse 10.0 and am having some trouble getting everything setup properly. I was running Suse 9.3 Pro and had it setup to share my Firefox profile located on a vfat partition so I can use the same profile on winXP and on Linux. All work well in 9.3, but with 10.0 I keep getting an error from Firefox (and Thunderbird also) stating that "Firefox cannot use the profile "default" because it is in use. Please choose another profile or create a new one". This error appears to be being caused because Firefox cannot gain access to the profile properly. The same error will occur if you point the profile to somewhere you don't have permissions for. The problem is that I DO have permissions to the share and I cannot figure out why this is happening. I have tested my setup with Ubuntu 5.10 and all works properly with that. Here is the fstab line that mounts the share: /dev/sda3 /windows/e vfat users,gid=winshare,umask=0002 0 0 My user is a member of the group winshare. I can use Konqueror to enter the directory and write new files to it. I have tried the same setup running as root and get the same error. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem, but it might. In kdm, if I choose to restart in a selected mode (a kernel or OS other than the default), it doesn't work, but it always did work properly in 9.3. (maybe another permissions problem?) Thank You, Mike

Checked that already. The profile works fine if I move it to the users home directory. Same with root. That is what makes me think that it is something with the permissions. Maybe something like SELinux??? I used the standard 1.0.7 Ubuntu package and it worked fine. I have tried the standard 1.0.6 openSUSE package and the upgraded 1.07 packages with the same result. The reason I asked you to test a 1.5b2 build from www.mozilla.org is that there was a change in the profile locking mechanism. We already have the 1.5 behaviour backported to 1.0.6 and 1.0.7 So if a 1.5b2 build from mozilla.org shows the same behaviour as our 1.0.7 package it's a regression in Firefox 1.5. So please report back if the above works or not.

Ok, sorry it took me so long to reply to this, I have been too busy to get to try this. I downloaded and ran Firefox 1.5b2 right from www.mozilla.org . The same error occurs if I try to use a profile from a vfat partition (like I said in an earlier post, the error wording is slightly different in 1.5, but I think it is the exact same error). I tried moving the profile to the /boot partition just to test it, and it works fine from there. I also tried as root and a normal user (both with full access to the partition), so the problem is either with the way Firefox is creating the lock, or the way 10.0 is allowing access. I have been running 1.5b2 on WinXP Pro since it was released with no problems. Same basic setup, Windows partition is NTFS, profile is on a FAT32 partition. just to let you know. We fixed it and it will be made available at least with our upcoming Firefox 1.5 package. I'm not sure if we will get an official update for this problem for 10.0. But when Firefox 1.5 will be finally released you can get it from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/mozilla/ (release candidates will be available in the experimental subtree in addition but there is no package with the fix yet. If you'll see a change in the packages in experimental/firefox the fix will be in there) CU, Wolfgang -- SUSE LINUX GmbH -o) Tel: +49-(0)911-740 53 0 Maxfeldstr. 5 /\\ Fax: +49-(0)911-740 53 679 90409 Nuernberg, Germany _\_v simply change to www.suse.com
