installing source packages with smart
Is it possible yet in smart to install a source package? For example, in apt I can use: apt-get source mutt And it will download and install the sources/spec files, etc in /usr/src/packages. Thanks Craig

You don't say. Except that it's not immediately apparent how to install a source package, at least not to me. smart --help - nothing relating to source packages returned smart install --help - much the same Of course there is an option to install from a url, but then I may as well download the source package and rpm it myself.
if your do not find your answer, please ask again.
Still here, question unanswered. Thanks *so* much for your assistance.

Great! I was thinking of something like this, didn't get round to it in the end.
Nothing about source-packages in smart-doku... => seems to be impossible :-(
My point entirely. Am looking through the source code for a hint or two - none as yet.
cheers, Soeren
Thanks, Craig

I found it here: http://www.linux-club.de/viewtopic.php?t=44887 (the last post). If you've problems with the german there, i say you that he says it can be converted to a real man-page using txt2man http://mvertes.free.fr/ #!/bin/bash if [ -e smart-cmd.txt ]; then rm -f smart-cmd.txt fi smart --help >> smart-cmd.txt echo "----------------" >> smart-cmd.txt echo "----------------" >> smart-cmd.txt for i in update install reinstall upgrade remove check fix download \ search query info stats \ channel priority mirror flag; do smart $i --help >> smart-cmd.txt echo "----------------" >> smart-cmd.txt echo "----------------" >> smart-cmd.txt done very simple, but useful ;-) cheers, Soeren

Indeed, doesn't seem to be supported as of now. Remember, it's 0.40 ;) Please file a bug on the smart tracker, or have a nice chat with the author, Gustavo Niemeyer. He's very often in #smart on freenode (IRC). He's a very nice guy, so be kind to him and he'll be helpful ;) Craig, you also wrote:

That would be a little more complex to do with smart, as it completely abstracts the underlying
package management.
cheers

Of course - that's why my first mail asked if it was possible "yet"!

I placed a wish on the tracker. As I wrote there, this is non-essential but very convenient. Praps this conversation was best for the smart mailing list, but it's got such a low throughput it seems my questions will be answered faster and more thoroughly here.
Craig, you also wrote:

Hmmm.. I did wonder about that... Agreed, more complex than it would at first seem.
cheers
Thanks Craig

This list is starting to tick me off a little! The days of a bunch of old hackers that think they are superior are over and I must admit that if someone gave me an answer like that I would also get my back up.
You don't say. Except that it's not immediately apparent how to install a source package, at least not to me. This proves my point nicely!

And here my friend you are being made out as a complete ass! You say go read the docs and then you don't do it yourself?

So all that happened here was a user asked a question, got abused and still has the problem. Sorry guys that is not how it works, I asked my first question earlier in the week and the first answer I got was a link to a spelling rule! For crying in a bucket!

If this is the way people are going to behave on this list you may as well spare yourself the pain and change to fedora now, no one will want to come here to ask questions and rather go to the fedora/debian/slack lists that are friendly and want to help new users. Is it that hard to be nice, friendly or helpfull? Or are you just lurking on the list waiting for people to ask questions so you can pounce and be a bastard? You must have a lot of friends......... Try it once, it may amaze you

Agreed, was a bit of bashing.

Gosh... yeah sure... just because one or two people gave answers like that, you're labeling the whole of the openSUSE community present on this list as being unfriendly and unhelpful. And, of course, Fedora, Debian and Slackware lists are much more nicer to unexperienced people than here, everyone knows that...
Is it that hard to be nice, friendly or helpfull? Or are you just lurking on the list waiting for people to ask questions so you can pounce and be a bastard? You must have a lot of friends.........
Is there any reason you're getting hyped up and personal like that ? (1)
Besides that, Craig had some more helpful replies, including from me.
And yet another useless thread starting...
cheers

Well I have been on Linux lists for many years now and can't remeber when was the last time I saw these kinds of answers. We as a community are not doing ourselves any favors here by scaring away new users. If you were a noob, unsure of this Linux thing and insecure without your M$ box, how would you react to an answer like that?

I agree, just got ticked by the snotty messages in the other mails.
And yet another useless thread starting...
Last from me

I would tend to agree with Mozzi, that some people on this list have become more antagonistic to new people than helpful. Whoever suggested using smart --help to solve this problem needs to do the same and find the there is -NO- mention at all about installing a src rpm. And they are -not- in the standard smart repos. A better solution is to either not answer at all or give an example, (would it be so hard?), that someone could use. There is no example given on how to add a repo either or are they automatically added? We must remember that new people are joining this list everyday and have -NO- clue on how/where to find answers which is why they are here. Be polite and provide answers/examples or don't respond and make us all look bad. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998
