[opensuse] Unable to Config VMware Server on 11.2
Has anyone succeeded in getting VMware server running on a 11.2 as the host OS? I had VMware Server 2.0.1 running on 11.1 but it fails similarly on 11.2. I have tried VMware Server v2.0.1 x64 VMware Server v2.0.2 x64 VMware Server v2.0.2 x32 VMware Server v1.0.11 Here is the results of the vmware-conf.pl script. (Again, it fails in the same place regardless of version): # vmware-config.pl Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped. I was able to get it installed by installing kernel-dev packages. I think you're looking specifically for the kernel-desktop ones, but I installed them all. -- Michael S. Yes, but you need patching. We talked about this sometime ago. For example: 9-11-19 23:59 . Subject: [opensuse] Has anybody gotten vmware server to work on 11.2, and how? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Wow! It seems I cannot get there from here! I am not sure if v1.0.10 can be made to work either. (I did run 2.0.1 on 11.1 on this same laptop and run 1.0.7 on an 11.0 system and Workstation 6.5.3 at work.) It looks like my options are: 1. Purchase Workstation 7 2. Use VirtualBox or some such (I do run a Windows XP VM for those programs which won't run native on SuSE.) Or run server 2.something on 11.2, which is "gratis". That's what I do, but it needs more power than the version 1 to be of use. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. OK, I followed the instructions at http://opensuse.swerdna.org/susevmwareserver.html and successfully built VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.x86_64, licensed it and started the vmware processes. Now when I try to connect to it via the web interface (http://127.0.0.1:8222), I get the following error message: The VMware Infrastructure Web Service at "http://localhost:8222/sdk" is not responding (Connection Refused). Try Again The service may not be responding because hostd is too busy or because it is not running. Try again in a few moments or restart hostd.Until communication with the VI Web Service is restored, VI Web Access will not be able to manage any hosts. I have stopped and restarted vmware service and hostd is running: root 15089 1 0 19:00 ? 00:00:01 /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-hostd -a -d -u /etc/vmware/hostd/config.xml At least I am making SOME progress. I finally got it rebooted (after I accidentally blew away my menu.lst - don't ask!) Anyway, it still won't connect. I check my firewall and the only packets being dropped are multicast/broadcast. I did succeed in installing VirtualBox OSE and installed SLES11 as a guest. It sure seems a lot easier to work with, more like VMware Server 1. Now if I can just find my Windoze XP CD... Dunno. But you could check on the vmware site, they have a lot of common issues commented. Google finds your 299 entries like yours. One mentions that there is a "details" button. Did you see it? Another says "While the error details are not very explicit, the reason for the error is very simple: the IPv6 lookup for “localhost” is not supported by the server.", - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I did notice but it never displayed anything I could tell. I do have IPv6 disabled though OSE at some point added this line to my /etc/hosts: ::1 localhost ipv6-localhost ipv6-loopback I don't know if it matters but, being a laptop, I am using NetworkManager in lieu of the conventional /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. I started to comment the line above out (in YaST) but was asked if I really wanted to do that since it was a system supplied entry. Opinions? Thank you, Lucky Leavell

Just try! If it doesn't work, undo. No permanent damage can be done, AFAIK. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Argh.
Here is the /var/log/vmware/hostd.log:

Curious! Once I had to kill that process manually.
The next to last entry looked suspicious because I had just stopped/restarted vmware (service vmware stop/start), so:
Indeed.
Finally, after stopping/starting vmware once again:

It is curious. Thinking... My 11.2 install has this in the /etc/hosts: - ----- 127.0.0.1 localhost # special IPv6 addresses ::1 localhost ipv6-localhost ipv6-loopback - ----- Just in case: you should at least have the entry "127...", the one you had to comment out is the "::1..."
Also, why is it trying port 8308 when 8222/8333 were specified in the coniguration?
How do you start the client? I assume you use firefox, browsing to http://localhost:8222? However, I see in the config files that port 8308 is used for something else.
Any ideas? (other than start over with VirtualBox which is looking better with each passing day!)

It is wrong. You need the localhost entry on 127.0.0.1, as you see on my file above. That is the cause of your problem, I believe.

I can ping both but 127.0.0.1 is in the ifconfig output for localhost so I corrected my /etc/hosts, stopped and started VMware and ... IT WORKS! Aside: stopping vmware failed to kill hostd again. It is indeed. 2.x is much slower than 1.x, unless you have a powerful cpu with plenty of memory. I assume it is because it uses a browser as display engine. I haven't tried it on 11.1, so I can't compare. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I tried XP Slow which is no speed demon natively but is unusable on 2.0.2 on 11.2. I fired up v1on 11.0 over a network and it is soooo much faster. The same VM on 2.0.1on 11.1 was no speed demon but usable. I wanted to upgrade this to 11.2 but will hold off until I migrate needed VMs to VirtualBox. Bummer! Then there is still VirtualBox... I tried an XP guest on vmware 2, on 11.2, and it is dog slow on my old machine, and prety fast on my new machine (core 2 quad, 8 GiB). Vmware 2.0 server requires _many_ resources.

Unfortunately, I can't: VB does not support oldies like Win Me, and vmware does.
