/sbin/modprobe is a symlink to /sbin/insmod, so if you want to do modprobe as a normal user, create a link /bin/modprobe to /sbin/insmod and give sufficient permissions to this, like: # ln -sf /bin/modprobe /sbin/insmod # chmod 755 /bin/modprobe Btw, don't worry about those messages you mentioned. I have a sound card with an es1371, it works perfectly, but I keep on getting this in the xconsole:
Jul 28 16:13:36 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-3 Jul 28 16:13:36 linux insmod: insmod: a module named es1371 already exists Jul 28 16:13:36 linux insmod: insmod: insmod char-major-14 failed Jul 28 16:13:36 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0 Jul 28 16:13:36 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0
