Do "ps ax | grep mysqld" and confirm the server is running. If yes then try "mysql --user=root -p" NOTE: "-p" is your MySQL password and not your system password. If that works the client works - then it is a cron problem. If the client fails, read up on MySQL permissions.

MySQL fails on startup and the daily CRON job reports an error, however, I can login via Knoda. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

mysql --user=root -p works fine. Any more suggestions? Also, I noticed that snort is not working either. Question, how does cron know what the roots password to MySQL is anyway? Is it stored in a special file, or does it use different means to check? Thanks for the help so far!

Mysql used one or two files in /etc/ my.cnf and mysqlaccess.conf To start Mysql goto /etc/init.d look for ./mysql
MySQLD Server is started with ./mysql start and stopped with ./mysql stop.
To start it set it up in cron to run "/etc/init.d/mysql start".
Why do you need to start and stop mysql? Set it to come up during the bootup using Yast2 > System > Runlevel > <alt>p. You can also fix the mouse and other things while you are at it.
I have it setup to come on at boot. I just had to change the default of S13mysql in runlevel 5 to S08mysql. This way MySQL is started before Snort. Now it works fine. Just mon is not working now. Thanks for the help! BTW I noticed in /etc/my.cnf it has password = user_password, which is commented out. Do I need to put the root's password here and uncomment it? Also, isn't this a security hole? Or, do I need to make it root:root with only root read/write capabilities? NeoFax

Don't do that: it will be removed by yast if you do certain things. Read "main init.d". -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
