Software/script that pings servers and alerts when down?
Dear Friends, Can someone please suggest some software or a script etc. that will ping servers and send an alert message (via email) if the host is unreachable (crashed). Thanks for your help, Markus Bergh ##################################################################################### This e-mail message has been scanned for viruses by our email server and cleared. #####################################################################################

That's basic script programming. man bash man ping man mail #! /bin/sh H='10.0.0.2' ping -q -c 1 $H &> /dev/null || echo "Host $H died" | mail root -s "Host $H died" Cheers, Leen

Two lines more, and make H a space-separated list of host/ip#; make a cron job that calls the script, and I think you're done. ;) HH="10.0.0.2 10.0.0.3" for H in $HH; do ping ..... done Cheers, Leen

That's file if you want root notified. What about mailing a user perhaps at your online or squirl mail account which you can check while on the road? CWSIV

Good point. What about the "mon" tool? Anybody have any opinions on this?

Is that proper English? I do not understand this sentence.

Exactly what did you not understand from mail's manpage? Cheers, Leen

Manpage?? What manpage? What's manpage? What are they for? Why would I want one? What would I see there? Would you read it for me and tell me what it says? Or Nagios. No licensing issues with Nagios like there are with BB either. I use it heavily myself. http://www.nagios.org/ -- Jarod C. Wilson, RHCE jcw@wilsonet.com

Or have a look at Big Sister. As the name implies, it's intended as an improvement on Big Brother :) http://bigsister.sourceforge.net

Let's say my email server crashed and Big Brother/Sister is watching it. How would I be alerted over email? Is there another method to being alerted? -- Tom Nielsen Neuro Logic Systems, Inc. 1.805.389.5435 x18 www.neuro-logic.com

Can't speak specifically for BB/BS, but I assume its the same as Nagios. In Nagios, I can (and do) configure multiple notifications, and on a per-host or per-host-group basis. For example, I have alerts for the checks on our Exchange server sent to my personal email account and my pager, everything else to the Exchange server and my pager. -- Jarod C. Dude: send your alert email to your cell phone. No one would send alerts to the same server that is down. Lemmie see, Where did I put that Clue Bat... ;-) -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
