Lucent Orinoco Silver (Wireless PCMCIA) on SuSE 8.0
Hi all, I've been trying to get this card to work in several distributions, recently SuSE, with no luck. I've tried every HOWTO, FAQ, driver... I've been compiling kernels, pcmcia packages, etc.. I've gotten as far as SuSE actually notices the card when I plug it in, and supplies some power, but as for getting it to load a driver, it won't do it. I'm a total Linux newbie, but have worked with computers for years. Should it really be so difficult? Any help or insight you could provide would be great. I'd like to run a strictly Linux environment for a couple of weeks to evaluate and determine if I can safely abandon windows, however, as a first impression, this hasn't been good. I'm still willing to try though, if I can get this card to work. Thanks Chris _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

Keith Winston, a frequent contributor on this list, added an extremely helpful section in the Unofficial SuSE FAQ about this very topic: http://susefaq.sourceforge.net He very kindly walked me through a this issue a month ago or so (check archives). Turns out my PCMCIA slot was bad, so I was not able to complete getting the card set up, but it's my understanding that others have followed his steps with great success. Good luck, Charles __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sign up for SBC Yahoo! Dial - First Month Free http://sbc.yahoo.com

Which version of SuSE are you using? With 7.3, it relatively easy to get it working. With 8.0, there is much wailing and knashing of teeth. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MCSE, N+ Right behind you, I see the millions Got spam? Get spastic http://spastic.sourceforge.net

Well I must admit, after the encouragement I recieved from Keith and others I did find it quite easy to get my system up and running with all of PCMCIA wireless cards. Need more than one due to Kismet, etc. I use the kernel so that it's a stock config basically with SSID and a MAC address. Hope we can help. /Dee
