The real question is: Are you too cheap to buy the DVD or CDs? If you are willing to suffer with a RedHat distro release... go for it. From: "Herman Knief" If you are willing to suffer with a RedHat distro release... go for it Wow! Herm your going to a bit of extreme w/ redhat are you not sir! I thought this was a linux(kernel same in all distro's)community project here and it is free abiding by our choice of the license correct! Or did I miss the downloading of/or cvs of source not being free? By the way the compiler issues w/redhat are dead and it is doing fine I downloaded the first beta and have been updating it since now running 2.4.2 all source is compiling great! I should say that SuSE has some major problems with the yast1 text based installer this time, some of us notice this stuff but don't flame each others preffered distros ot the want for an iso to burn................chill out guys it is linux, the same kernel code in all of the distros........ If a script or compiler, source or something is missing to cry fixit, I will say by the way though, I am in every way paying and supporting Linux for its continued growth, however I do to like free beer! Extreme indeed! I think we are beginning to see the appearance of SuSE List Rage (SLR (tm)) ! ;-) It's contageous. I even got a dose of it a few weeks ago. JLK On Wednesday 18 April 2001 06:04, Eric Fortner wrote:

You think so... have you installed Redhat lately? Have you run into any of the issues that they have had regarding libs and version of code for some of the modules? Redhat always wants to be first with the latest glibc... how many times has that caused utter chaos for the end users? Yes, the kernel source is supposed to be the same. So, do you download your kernels from kernel.org? Do a comparison sometime of some of the code you get with a generic kernel from kernel.org and them compare it to a 2.X.X-AC kernel that Alan Cox has run through, or a SuSE kernel. I will guarantee that you'll find patches and other fix ups that are not in the "stock" kernel. I have yet to see Redhat do the level of diligence they should in rolling their distro. Some people complain that SuSE is slow... I don't think it's slow, I think it's cautious - and worthwhile for the end-user. I've been running Linux in one form or another since '93. I have tried EVERY major distro out there. I will not claim that SuSE is perfect... but they are far better than almost anyone else out there when it comes to pulling it all together. - Herman Disclaimer: The above statements are my own belief, and do not reflect the views and opinions of many on this list. Linux is indeed Linux, and we need to stick together as much as possible... but I understand a lot of people being "fed up" with Red Hat. Red Hat was my first Linux distro (version 5.1), which I soon replaced with SuSE (5.3), partly for the amount of added software, but also because it's more stable, more secure and better documented than Red Hat. I recently tested RH 6.2 and 7.0 out of the box, and I find them full of security holes, and in desperate need of patches, and reconfiguration. Where a SuSE 7.1 out of the box worked fine and offers a fair level of security. (Just check out the existing Linux-Worms, almost all of them target Red Hat systems) But what bothers me most about RH is that they're going down the same road as M$... They have exclusive deals with a number of software vendors (like Rational, which only supports its products on RH, because the made a 'deal'). And that is not fair to other distro's... Competition between Linux internally should be about features, stability, support or documentation. Not the same politics that are trying to kill the Open Source spirit.

Such as? So far I've done my two home computers with Yast1, and not a hitch. Updated both with yast1, and not a hitch. I ask because I might be missing something and the system isn't working right. - - When I did it LILO failed. I had to switch to another console to set it up manually during installation. A guy here had a number of problems with the ftp install: - - Kernel image could not be found so couldn't be installed - - Installer fails when ReiserFS chosen - - LILO failed I don't know why this kind of stuff started in 7.1. It's pretty frustrating to the newbie here. IIRC doesn't 7.1 change the locations of some files in order to come more into line w/ all teh other Linux stuff???? Seems to me I saw that flicker cross my eyeballs in one of my all nighters , but I haven't a clue just where I read it, probably in the configuration book, the BIG one ( 600 pages !)
SuSE is trying to conform 100% to LSB. That means changes. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.

SuSE Professional is the 7CD/1DVD boxed version. It wouldn't be put on the ftp server. You can do an FTP install if you wish...or as MHA has said (I haven't checked)..the iso is on the ftp site. You really shouldn't compare RH to SuSE..SuSE doesn't use a broken compiler and most of the stuff they are shipping with their 7.1 release isn't "newer" they are just getting around to putting it out..there XFree86 4.0.3 is the same as the 4.0.3 that SuSE has..shheessh..if you just want free beer..go for it. BTW..this threat almost died before you sent this AGAIN. /end pissy free beer wanting iso rant -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

Go for it. But SuSE has everything that this has except their TUX webserver. The same kernel, same KDE, Same XFree, and so on. I can't say what is on FreeBSD. But I also checked the prices. Sure, you can download all three CD's. And that's all you get. No support except mail lists, Print what little documentation they have on your own printer. Now on the other hand, you can purchase it from whatever company you want. The deluxe workstation from linuxcentral is $74.95. With this you get about 300 apps, including SO 5.2, Acrobat 4.05, a couple of loki demos, and some other free stuff that is available. Oh, you can also get 60 days update support for 5 machines and telephone base support. OH, and a free RedHat hat.. As always it's your choice. But for the money, it just doesn't add up.
