Do an rcpostfix restart. I had some serious issues with Postfix not reading /etc/aliases and other weird shit. So I switched back to Sendmail. Postfix is nice...but I couldn't get it to see the changes I wanted and to behave. * Landy Roman (landie@concentric.net) [010622 17:00]: ->suddenly posatfix stop working. i rebooted ->and see postfix failure at boot... looked at ->log and see sendmail died mailsystem down -> ->i tried /sbin/init.d/postfix restart and get ->failed i tried stop start and both fail as ->well, ->can someone shed some light ->-- ->SuSe 7.0 Linux 2.4.2 i686 Fri Jun 22 19:05:00 ->EDT 2001 -> ->-- ->To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com ->For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com ->Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq and the ->archives at http://lists.suse.com -> -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org ----- "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin

Strange. I never had any problem. What did /var/log/mail say?

Just a general note; never never reboot a Un*x box because of failures. The only single time one should reboot ones Un*x box is to install a new kernel. Here is a good example of a guy who's happy he did not reboot: http://www.ee.ryerson.ca:8080/~elf/hack/recovery.html -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. Hi Landy Can you get any clues from /var/log/messages ? or maybe you have a crashed instance of postfix in process - try top to see. Post any info you find . Cheers JohnWM On Fri, 22 Jun 2001, Landy Roman wrote:

Good call. If anything weird happens, Posfix logs it by syslog, but it normaly is /var/log/mail on SuSE. Landi: post the significant log entries, then we may passible know what went wrong. Now we are searching in the dark and we can only give opinions, not facts.

That would be a first... I use Postfix for over 3 years at home and at several (busy) servers at work and found it to be a robust, stable piece of software. Postfix is writen to be stable and never to loose any mail if it can be helped. If Postfix realy crashed, the people on the Postfix mailing list would love to hear it.

Regards, Cees.
Are you calling both Sendmail and Postfix? You say the logs indicate Sendmail, and you are calling Postfix? rcsendmail start? Anything listening on port 25? Regards, Jon On Fri, 22 Jun 2001, Landy Roman wrote:
