Hi everyone. I can't get the KDE systems sounds to work after upgrading to SuSE 6.4. I can set them up and click the test button and they work fine but after that, silence. My /opt/kde/bin/startkde looks like this tartifthere kcontrol -init sleep 1 ; startifaudio kaudioserver (sleep 1 && startifaudio kwmsound) & Is the problem here? all other stuff like XMMS works fine. Thanks, Steve. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Try either of the following edits to your startkde file:
follows:
OPTION 1
--------
# sound detection.
#
#function startifaudio () {
# if [ "`grep sound /proc/devices`" ]; then
# startifthere $@
# else
# echo "No sound device available. $@ not started."
# fi
function startifaudio () {
TESTVAR=`grep -A1 "Audio devices" /dev/sndstat | tail -n 1`
test -n "$TESTVAR" && startifthere $@
}
OPTION 2
--------
-This applies only if you are using OSS for your sound card use.
-Replace the "grep sound" with "grep OSS" is the startifaudio function.
One other thing to keep in mind is that it seems these edits should be done to
the /usr/X11R6/bin/startkde file, and NOT to the /opt/kde/bin/startkde. At
least that's what I have observed.
Hope this helps...I know it solved my problems.

Yep. thanks. I can now hear sounds. I think the problem was that I had a link to the /opt directory and changing that file had no effect on the setting. Solved!
