[SLE] No laptop sound
I've got a new Dell 5000 laptop and I'm having trouble getting sound out of it using Alsa. I'm running SuSE-6.3 which carries an old version of Alsa which doesn't support the Maestro sound card, so I got the latest version via Freshmeat. Following the ALSA-HOWTO, I load the modules using 'modprobe snd-card-es1968' and 'modprobe snd-pcm-oss' and all the device files appear as expected. When I try to 'cat largefile.txt > /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p' I get an error saying "cat: write error: File descriptor in bad state". Is there support for that card in the kernel? I don't remember.
Because I have a laptop with a ESS Solo-1 card that alsa said
it recognized but would fail to set up properly. I finally
compiled the kernel with the driver for that card in it and
it works great. Not as a module. Someone on the laptop
howto pages said if I did it as a module then I'd have to
put a single line in modules.conf.

Try putting "alias sound maestro" no quotes in modules.conf
and comment out the alsa lines at the bottom.

Yes, the sound is supported by the kernel directly. I grabbed the 2.2.15 kernel yesterday and tried it and it worked, so that's an answer. I'd prefer to use ALSA and the stock SuSE kernel though. Someone said the card was automatically detected by the ALSA shipped with 6.4, so I'll do an upgrade over the weekend. Will there be a 2.2.15 kernel for SuSE-6.4 appearing in the near future? IIRC, that kernel module is in 2.2.14 also. All you'd need to do is read the existing /etc/modules.conf, and uncomment the settings for the es1370 kernel module, and replace the instance of es1370 with maestro. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 x121 _\_V 6D04 39E0 CAE9 9ADA 2CA3 2EBE 898A 6C37 CA1E A29C -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
