The Sane packages of SuSE are generally outdated for new scanners or unfit for old scanners (your case) --> download sane tarballs. I used the Sane tarballs of sane-backends without problems with SuSE-7.3 and SuSE-8.1 (just patience) http://panda.mostang.com/sane/ ==> download ==> old versions Download sane-backends-1.0.10 tarball Then ./configure - make - make install Tame yast2 not to insist to reinstall its unworkable version (after deleting it of course). Keep the xsane graphical interface package of SuSE-8.2 for use with Gimp. Good luck -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631

How about ./configure, make, checkinstall - does make install and converts to rpm so the data base can track it and an rpm -e gets rid of it when need be. Works great for me so far. That what YaST doesn't complain.
Tame yast2 not to insist to reinstall its unworkable version (after deleting it of course).
