[opensuse] 11.3 on Thinkpad X21 issues
Just finished installing 11.3 on my Thinkpad X21(P3/700, 384MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility P/M 4MB). Having a few issues. Had to install from the dvd using my Dock. 1. When the laptop is on the dock, I get a message from KDE4 that the audio device is unavailable. Booting without the dock seems to be ok, but if I dock while running, I get the same issue with the audio being unavailable. 2. After installing MPlayer, I can't get audio unless I su to root. If I run it under the user, I get a permission denied error when starting MPlayer. My MPlayer is from PacMan repos. 3. The panel is now a dark color, almost black. It wasn't like that on the first boot. Can't read the clock. Haven't changed any settings. Assuming this isn't normal. Overall, I've noticed that 11.3 is MUCH slower than the 11.0 installed I just replaced. I realize this is fairly low end hardware(and the RAM is MAXed), and have also installed LXDE to see how well it runs. However, I was hoping for some suggestions to make this a bit faster. Fixed. Had to add audio to the user's permissions. Shouldn't this have been done by default?

LXDE definately runs MUCH better than KDE4. In fact, I find it a lot more like KDE3. Nice. Never really got much of a chance to use it till now. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Add fluxbox, Enlightenment (E17), and Enlightenment (E16) to you list of desktops. You will need to use flux for a while before you begin to see the true elegance in the tearoff menus, etc... Once you start thinking like flux, the lightbulb goes on and you realize the potential of the wm. E17 - still under serious development, but is very nice + eye candy galore (but it works ;-) Built-in file manager is awkward, so keep kde3 konqueror, nautilus or thunar handy. E16 - A decade old and still a wonderful and fast desktop (very fast on anything 486+) I put them all on my favorite desktop pile. Of course all need kde3 installed just for the plethora of useful and fast apps that k3 provides. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
