David , this is what comes up using iwconfig: Are you able to tell me a little more what to do? Your help is much appreciated. And yes still on the free service.

Whoops, 1st my error I should have typed ifconfig not ipconfig (can not imagine where that came from). "man iwconfig" will give you some of the commands you need, not all cards suport all options so do not worry if you can not set a nickname or similar. But you do need to set mode to Managed or Ad-hoc. I would guess your ISP will be Managed in which case you will also need the essid of there network. as root iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed iwconfig wlan0 essid "network name" That should get you connected so when you do iwconfig the Access point mac number will show up. Then you need to set up wep - if they use it. After that you can go to ifconfig to set the IP number. If you know one you can use this is less error prone than starting with dhcp. ifconfig wlan0 192.168.0.0 up Then you need route and dns setup, and you should be running. Then you have the information to put into the config files so it is automatic at boot up. But as your system is using wlan0 I would have hoped Yast would have done all this. It may well be worth trying Yast again with the essid and wep information. Good luck David

I've got it all working! I deleted in Yast everything in the networkcards configuration. After that I let Yast detect the card again and up came wlan0 with address automatic with DHCP. Next, next and Yast saved it. Started the network with ( root) rc network restart. I didn't get any failures as before but wlan0 said , cannot read the card , install PCMCIA, what I did, rc network restart and there it was, Connected! I'm a happy , chappy (aka /bill) in the sun again. Thanks also to everybody else who took interest in this, and hopefully it will help other people who have problems with this as well. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south.
