[SLE] Grap TTFonts of Win2000 disk?
Hello, I'm downloading TrueType fonts, and it's taking me a while. I'm in Mowcow Russia, and can buy Win2000 for about $4 . Can I grab TTFonts off of this disk? Well think about it, IS Linux really free? Technically (or how to put it) Yes, but practically and in a real world sense... I don't think so. Ok howl on me, but look here first. The OS and most soft is free, to download from the net but it's quite a lot of bytes to bring home and FAR from all users have free or flat rate connection, but have to pay for every second they'r online. So you may not pay to the developers, but you do to the phone companies and alike. Alternatively you can get it on a CD disk or several and that is not free either, a SuSE distro is about $50 where I live. Still cheeper (and better) then Windoze, but then you have the much more intencive update cycles with Linux, if you wanna stay on top (and many do and get most releases of their fav distro), so with SuSE that would do $150-$200 a year! Which is far more Win costs... ok you got a lot of soft included, but honestly how many of them are you really using or even try out? Don't get me wrong, I'm not an advocate for M$, or questining Linux, but I think the word Free is somewhat relative and a subject of definition here, and also I think it's a remain from the "old days" when most Linux users where students with free access to grab it. This is not the case anymore, I think. Also look at all the $$$ moving in on the Linux sceen now - don't you think they expect to get a profit in return? I don't say it is wrong or bad, but I think sometimes we also have to update or dictionaries. Then Linux being a superior OS in contrast to Win is a whole diferent matter.

George Zeigler wrote: Well... when I started with TTF's I thought: were to get them from. I remembered a Win CD and my old Win 3.11 disks. Oh, these files were compressed. M$ compress stuff. Well does "inflate.exe" run under Linux? NO! (how??) Does it run in the DOS box? well NO! what sais the file command to these compresses files? DATA! Well, I found that the M$ "compress" format is obviously not supported under linux. I ended up d/l some fonts from M$ and expanded some others at work. you can simply copy any *.TTF files over that come across... Juergen
