It would be nice if the Suse install created a kernel .config file that could be dropped into a new kernel source code directory. That way we could run 'make oldconfig' and be sure it'll work. But it doesn't.. :-( -----Original Message----- From: David [mailto:dg@stanwater.fsnet.co.uk] Sent: 28 December 2001 11:12 To: SLE Subject: Re: [SLE] Upgrading the SuSE kernel I have noticed this thread running and thought that I might have a go at it. I have Suse 7.2. Never had any success at installing a kernel to date.
From the files listed, in what order should they be installed? I would appreciate any hints.

How about just getting these rpm's? Why both doing all the patching that SuSE does yourself when Hubert has done a tremendous job of it. It's a lot of needless work.
Get these...here:
k_deflt-2.4.16-22.i386.rpm kernel-source-2.4.16.SuSE-24.i386.rpm modutils -2.4.12-11.i386.rpm
And if you use ReiserFS..get this as well..
reiserfs-3.x.0k_pre10-8.i386.rpm
You can find them here...

If you have say 2.4.7 from SuSE..just get the kernel-source rpm and once installed cd into /usr/src/linux and type make cloneconfig. This will clone the current running kernel and prompt you for the new things. As far as the kernel rpm's...just install it and run mk_initrd and lilo. It should work just fine..several people at my office have updated because I expressed how much better 16 is over .10 and they had no issues. -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org -----=====-----=====-----=====-----=====----- I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

I have got this far without problem, but cannot get the new kernel to install. mk_initrd from /usr/src/linux just gives me using "/dev/hdb11" as root device (mounted on "/") no initrd required rmdir: too few arguments Try 'rmdir --help for more information. and lilo runs but does not add it . KDE control centre still shows the Kernel as 2.4.4 Where do I go from here to install 2.4.16
