Hi again! Well I had this thirst to learn Perl. I have never programmed before and I would like to learn as much as possible about Perl since I constrantly read about it during the messages in this group and all over the internet. Can someone point me to a good manual that I could download, or perhaps a good site?? Thanx. Chris

It's good stuff, all right :-) Once you learn perl, you'll also find php very easy to pick up (php is very perl-like), and so for your next trick you can start writing dynamic web content easily. % % Can someone point me to a good manual that I could download, or perhaps a good % site?? The best resource, hands down, is "Learning Perl" published by O'Reilly. It's not that expensive and if you're serious about jumping in then you'll find yourself referring to it (and to its companion "Programming Perl") frequently. There are a number of tutorials and docs on the web regarding programming in Perl, from the ground level to specific, esoteric applications. You might surf over to perl.org and see what that have under their tutorials, or just start with a google search for "perl introduction tutorial" or similar. % % Thanx. % Chris HTH & HAND :-D -- David T-G * There is too much animal courage in (play) davidtg@justpickone.org * society and not sufficient moral courage. Hi again!
Well I had this thirst to learn Perl. I have never programmed before and I would like to learn as much as possible about Perl since I constrantly read about it during the messages in this group and all over the internet.
Can someone point me to a good manual that I could download, or perhaps a good site??
The Perl CD Bookshelf is great. They are up to version 3 now, and it goes for $70. The version 2 can be found on ebay for less than $10 and is good enough for a beginner. The version 1 is online at various sites like: http://morfo.phyche.ac.ru/books/perl/ It is a bit outdated, but a beginner would never know the difference. It also would be good to go http://learn.perl.org and subscribe to the beginners maillinglist. If you don't like email, the same list is on a nntp server at nntp.perl.org. The nntp is a nice way to go. Anyways, just go thru the examples the experts explain everyday, and in a short time, you will get the hang of it. Also look at the Online Library at http://learn.perl.org, the book Beginning Perl by Simon Couzens is available there online. There are alot of free tutorials online, just do a google search for "perl tutorials". The experts will all tell you that all the needed info is in "perldoc perldoc", but you need to be good with perl to understand most of perldoc. Good Luck. P.S. Also go to http://perlmonks.org and sign up to be a monk. They have tutorials, free advice from experts, and a place to see real everyday problems discussed. -- I'm not really a human, but I play one on earth.

I'd second David's opinion that O'Reilly is the place to start. Learning Perl by Randal Schwartz is where I started years ago. Very entertaining examples. There's a volume 2 just out that's as good but more advanced. Once you are through vol 1, the Perl Cookbook by Christianson and Torkington has a lot of useful recipies both from the immediate, "How do I do this?" point of view, and as a lot of well written example code. Note: I've just recommended a good 4 side inches of book. -- Michael James michael.james@csiro.au System Administrator voice: 02 6246 5040 CSIRO Bioinformatics Facility fax: 02 6246 5166
