Hi! I have some different questions for which I expect an answer. I have SuSE Linux 7.3 Pro. First I wanna know how to change the background image at the logging screen in graphical mode. At the startup it's an image from SuSE with a lot of welcome in different languages. If I want to change this, what can I do? What is the startup file of the system where can I put a command that will be executed each time the system startup no matter which user will log in? Example, I want that my PPPoE connection start automatically at boot, where can i put the line to start it? In the same way of the previous question, what is the configuration file for a user where we can place command to be executed when the user log in without the user interaction? The next question, I don't know if somebody here can help me because it is probably not the specific groupe but I guess. I have netscape6 and I use it to browse and for graphical interface for my mail because I didn't find another more or equally performant with full attachment support and background in mail, HTML mail... Is it possible to have a command that open only netscape mail and not the browser? Is it possible to save the POP password for the mail account to prevent to have to type it each time? Control centre -> System -> Login manager If you're not logged in as root you'll have to click the 'root' button in the lower right corner and enter your root password to be able to change anything.

In general, for things that aren't dependant on anything else you can put the commands in /etc/rc.d/boot.local. That gets run before anything else on bootup. Unfortunately, SuSE doesn't have (by default) an "rc.local" script that gets run *after* the other startup scripts, so if your command relies on other things being active you'll have to create an rc-script for it. But I don't think that's necessary for PPPoE. I'm not certain since I've never actually used it, but if you're using smpppd to dial out it should be sufficient to set START_SMPPPD="yes" in /etc/rc.config and configure smpppd to connect on startup.
In the same way of the previous question, what is the configuration file for a user where we can place command to be executed when the user log in without the user interaction?
If the commands are for all users, /etc/profile.local is probably the best place for it. For individual users, to put their own login commands, there is a file .profile (note the leading dot) in every users home directory that gets run on every login. The man page for the shell you're using can give more specific details on this.

This stuff should be controlled in /etc/rc.d.

Would ~/.bashrc (or the equivalent for the shell of your choice) work?

Interesting question.

I upgraded to the latest Netscape from their site, and there is always a check box to remember the password when it requests one. It doesn't work consistently, but it's better than nothing. It hasn't forgotten this morning.

Hi all, after much teeth gnashing and replacing motherboard and playing around with few kind of DDR memery vendors i finally got my Athlon up and running without falling apart every now and then. configuration: Athlon 1.3Gz (not 1.33... :() 1G of DDR from Micron IWill DX333 motherboard (if you just planning on building system - pick that one.. it beats ASUS to dust.. perfomance difference is incredible when i am looking back at ASUS's A7AK266, and its flawless unlike ASUS) ATI RADEON VE with monitor hooked on DVI interface.. two 80G Maxtors as HDD... LNE100TX network card... of course network card wouldnt work untill i did upgrade from 2.4.10 that comes with 7.3 pro to be 2.4.16 (from SuSE ftp)- then it runs on completely same configuration :) Sound - didnt check it yet, but i dont care much, i have mp3-able disk player :) So i am burning CD and listening music without hoggin my system. To get graphical system works with digital signal - was somewhat a trick, but i got around with using Summit Accelerated X from xig.com. (it also much faster than regular XFree anyway) Then it was USB keyboard & mouse (cordless optical freedom doodaah from Logitech) - had to hook kb to PS/2 port, and apply changes that SuSE got in their db about usb-uhci.. Then of course mouse happens to be /dev/input/event1, and not /dev/inpute/event0 as usual :) But its working now, and Xig's stuff got me mousewheel without extra pain (like mapping it to buttons, which causing most of java apps go nuts) So its all up and running (including cool 3D perfomance, and unlike XIG like to suggest i didnt had to sacrifice nice splashes at the boot time :)) with one tiny exception - as soon as i am trying to turn system with shutdown - its going fine, reaching level 0, unmounting all partitions & etc. Then it just throws segmentation fault at my face and sits there until i will turn it off manually. :( Anyone has suggestions? I would love to get rid of it :) Cheers, Sergei
