[SLE] Howto report a question, problem, bug, solution?
Dear list,
I just bought SuSE 6.3 and am very satisfied with it.
Some problems I had with Mandrake 7.0 and RedHat 6.1 were simply
non-existent in SuSE 6.3 --- I had a complex server running up in
no time (although Mandrake and RedHat have their plusses, too; in
the end imho it is a personal opinion, namely how you balance the
+'s and -'s, also depending on your personal expertise level).
Anyways, I stumbled on a few bugs and problems, and therefore wonder:
what is the proper way to report a bug or non-trivial question?
(or solution!)
I read the faq and scanned the web site and manual of SuSE. The only
thing I found was mailing to feedback@suse.de or to isupport@suse.com
(after you've registered, which I did). There does not seem to be
a Bugzilla (or other) web online bug report submission/tracking like
RedHat has (and other distro's, too), which seems quite handy.
Or should one just mail to this list? :-)
Btw: having the support knowledge base locally, too, is sometimes
very handy! (eg. when you're not on the net yet, and want to look
up something about that!)
Bye-bye,
Eric Maryniak

Indeed.

If you think, you have found a bug, just send it to feedback@suse.de (or bugs@suse.de, it's the same account anyway). Even though we cannot guarantee a personal reply, your report will be checked and will be added to our internal Bugzilla database, if it's a valid report. Wellcome to the club ;-)

Non-trivial questions could pose a problem. Please have a look at appendix H of your manual, which details what our free installation covers (and what not!) before sending a mail to isupport@suse.com.
(after you've registered, which I did). There does not seem to be a Bugzilla (or other) web online bug report submission/tracking like RedHat has (and other distro's, too), which seems quite handy.
Well, not yet :-) AFAIK, It's planned to make our bug tracking system accessable from the outside. For the moment use feedback@suse.de for reporting bugs or other feedback.
Or should one just mail to this list? :-)
Well, it never hurts to do that ;-) And if you have problems in areas not covered by our free installation support the list may still get you support you don't have to pay for.
Btw: having the support knowledge base locally, too, is sometimes very handy! (eg. when you're not on the net yet, and want to look up something about that!)
Only remember that it isn't as up-to-date as our online version ;-) So if
you don't find an answer in your local sdb, check the online version.

Interesting. This is the first Suse distribution since 5.3 (and I've upgraded at every release since then) that has given me problems. All the other upgrades have been 99.9% seamless - this one has been 90% seamless: Lilo doesn't work properly and I think something has been dropped from the kernel between 2.2.10 and 2.2.13 since I cannot read audio discs from my CD drive with 2.2.13 but could with 2.2.10 (I'm going to re-install 2.2.10 tonight). The reason I think it's the kernel is an e-mail from a friend who is involved with Linux development. When I explained the problem and some of the error messages I received, his immediate response was to check the kernel. I've compiled 2.2.14 and have the same problem. It still might possibly be a hardware problem (though that is becoming less likely). So, since I could read audio from the CD with 2.2.10, I'm re-installing that with the same config that was then then to see if things still work. Otherwise, it's bug report time. In addition, in spite of being registered, I have yet to hear back from Suse support (apart that is from an automated response) concerning these problems - I sent in the report over 10 days ago. I'm concerned that Suse may be trying to push out distributions too fast. My reason for saying this is that similar things happened with Redhat about 2 years ago which is when I moved over to Suse. I really hope that this upgrade has just been a glitch in the system and that they will return to normal soon. I have a four way boot laptop. RedHat, Caldera, Corel and SuSE6.3. Sound works perfectly in all oses with all kernels, except SuSE 6.3. Sound worked perfectly with SuSE 6.2 in the same partition. I do not think the kernel has anything to do with it. Even 2.3.42 works in all but SuSE6.3. I can't figure it out. Adrian Burd wrote:

My SuSE 6.3 install went excellent, and sound worked from the day I installed with OSS/Linux that shipped on the distribution. This sounds odd to hear these reports. -Dee W.D.McKinney (Dee) deem@wdm.com "The trouble with doing nothing is it's hard to tell if you are finished." -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

As much as I like suse (I run 4 suse server, a workstation and am
waiting for Sparc Suse, but I may go with RedHat as I can't have an idle
server waiting for a distro). A friend of mine (who installed RedHat
without any problems). Had to try to install SuSE over 10 times to
finally get it on. The graphical install was horrendus. And he was just
completely unimpressed and returned to RedHat. Much to my Dismay. It's
nice to be on leading edge. But what is the point if you leave a path of
broken and half assed software behind you?

I don't think it was something in the kernel. I upgraded my Suse 6.2 to the 2.2.14 kernel, and sound works great. Victor On Fri, 11 Feb 2000, Adrian Burd wrote:

Make sure you run mk_initrd after compiling a new kernel, and/or remove
the initrd line from lilo.conf.
The 6.3 boot process is different.
Hope this helps.
