during the 2.4.1x series (x > 6) there have been several ReiserFS fixes in mainline kernel, so you may want to report your issue to SuSE support and see whether your problem is known and being fixed or it is an entirely new one. In the latter case, it will be fully investigated by SuSE and any fixes will be integrated in future SuSE kernels. The ReiserFS team FAQ page says that
* Why do things freeze on my IDE hard drive for annoying amounts of time Because when large writes are scheduled all at once, reads can starve. A fix for this is evolving; the later > > >>your ReiserFS patch, the better we handle this.
But honestly I have no idea whether this can be related to symptoms you reported or not. I definitely recommend you report the problem to SuSE.

On heavy load ( ADSM BAckup / Oracle Online Backup to disk with rman System
hangs.
You can ping the server but you cannot login local or over network. It is
not possible
to switch localy to an other loginscreen. ( Alt-f1 Alt-f2). There is no log
information on the
server an no kernel messages send to other server (loghost ) via syslogd.
