I agree, it's rude, and usually if the person knew where to look, they
wouldn't have asked. As I have said before a major difference between
the tone of this list and freebsd-questions is the frequency of "RTFM"
and "PLEASE WRAP TEXT AT 72 CHARACTERS" answers, which are far more
frequent there than here. Like, how hard is it really to read
unwrapped text? I manage in absolutely any mail client I use...
There's this attitude some people have that it is beneficial to pore
over irrelevant documentation for hours, trying things that don't work
as frustration mounts. What it really is is a waste of time. It's so
much more efficient to ask a quick question and get a quick
answer... hey, it's kinda like open-source itself, information wants
to be free... and you don't have to reinvent the wheel every time. As
long as there are obstacles to finding out which information is
relevant, we'll need this kind of help. And as long as most people
oblige others, and the implicit collective contract is fulfilled, we
have an optimal equilibrium.

That's why this list kick ass overall (uber alles ja?). Considering the kind of crap I've expereinced with other lists I hold this list as valuable and dear. The people are generally of a different class and character (a better class of people IMHO). I truely understand issues like those of the poeple that may not want to read news post. Overall, they may vent some frustration, but in the end they offer various solutions to the situation, like email header tags for filtering purposes - It's smart, it's fair, it's a solution rather than an endless flame war. For the most part I see help by the tons and courtesy in almost all posts. I do understand the frustration of some users that don't get help - when your sys is broken you want it fixed NOW, and tend to be impatient. However, with a little effort and tenacity (aka re-post) you will get quality help. For those few that have posted simple replies like RTFM or Try YaST and nothing more - I've learned to ignore that much like most people that use trinitron monitors are no longer aware of the 2 horizontal lines on their screen. I almost get protective of this site when trolls come calling - but I've learned to take the lead of the senior and more mature list user and just ignore the trolls - they tend to go away quickly that way. All in all, I have very little complaints about this list, and the very few complaints I may have from time to time are so trival that I would be embarrassed to express them. SuSe rocks, and so does this list (because the people rock) Just MHO. Cheers. Curtis On Friday 15 June 2001 10:02 pm, Corvin Russell wrote:

I can't agree more this list has been a god-send since I've joined. Though I have not needed to post very often the information gathered has been priceless. Considering the number of active list members the politeness and responsiveness is quite extraordinary. I'm glad to be part of this group.

Haha! Good that sense of humor guides all of you here...
Oliver, I totally agree with you. I had the same experience with the FreeBSD list. I mean, all day long it is "RTFM" and "please wrap text at 74 characters". To be honest it is totally off-putting and I unsubscribed. The unstated motto of these groups seems to be "I sat on a blunt object and now you must share my pain".
Actually the suse-security list has a bit the same character.
But this list is 99% great. Keep it up.
Enjoy the summer, Corvin
Corvin, if you understand german, you may join suse-talk for instance and have a big laugh... "Oh behave" ... hahaha You too man! Enjoy your posts! Olli

Yes Mr. Cowherd, you bring up valid point. This is one of the reasons I have become so fond of the SuSE mailing list. On other list (e.g. the old Maximum Linux list, etc..) flaming and condensation of the other users was common place. The intimidation factor is also another valid point. My wife is
Gosh! What a looong mail which you sent in now. I agree, many lists get more and more UNFRIENDLY. Especially the german Suse-Linux Lists. They regulate everything and complain about things I would not even waste a thought on. Here, however, speech is free, the folks do not ... like... pray the netiquette all day long and the tone, which makes the music, is much more friendly here.
Here you do not start flaming or "PLONKING" (as the german lamers call it) only because of netiquette-things like full quoting.
Here, you just say: Curtis, a little shorter please :;-)))) (quoting)
My wish for now:
KEEP UP THIS NICE LIST!! I LOVE READING YOU ALL HERE!
Happy weekend... Olli
