More: Connection Sharing
Ok, for those of you who are new: I have a Win XP Pro SP2 laptop. I have a generic Suse 9.1 Personal desktop. Desktop is connected to wireless network. I want the laptop to connect to my desktop as a gateway to the wireless network. I have a crossover cable, but the laptop isn't getting assigned an IP. Anyone knows what to do, let me know. Keep it surreal, TheBlue

1) Set up a dhcp server on the desktop system, to assign an address. or 2) Use a static address.
And how exactly would I do either of those things? Which is to say,
How do I set up a DHCP server, or use a static address? I am such an
idiot.

How about starting with Yas2/Network services/DHCP server? :) Cheers Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85
Looking.....It ain't there. I have Personal, not Professional. I'll
check rpmfind for a dhcp server.

It's easier to use a static address. IIRC it is in the properties (right click) of the network card on the XP box. Assign a static address that isn't in use on your network. Then assign the IP of the Linux box as the gateway. My laptop is down right now, or I could give exact instructions. DHCP is doable, but a bit more work on the Linux box. Good luck, Jim
Woah, thanks! When your laptop gets back up, let me know what to do.
I'll try playing around right now.
I feel more 1337 now,

Set the network adapter in your SuSE desktop to 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0, and set your XP NIC to 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0, gateway set to 192.168.1.1. You will need to set up SuSEfirewall2 on your desktop to forward and masquerade. BTW, 9.1 is available on the internet, so you could either download any packages not in Personal, or set up an additional installation source via ftp or http. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

It's easiest to use static addresses. Just go into Yast, and configure the NICs for static addresses. You'll have to pick two in one of the RFC 1918 ranges, perhaps 192.168.1.10 & 192.168.1.20. You'll also have to configure your firewall to do address translation.
