Can't compile k3b-0.8 under SuSe using kde3.1
Hello SuSE gurus, I have a new installation of SuSE8.1 with kde3.1. I downloaded the k3b .8 source (k3b-0.8.tar.gz) and I get the following error when I try compiling it. Running make -f Makefile.cvs for k3b-0.8 ... ------------------------------------------------------------- This Makefile is only for the CVS repository This will be deleted before making the distribution *** Creating acinclude.m4 !!! Can anyone please help me? Or suggest any clues? Thanks in advance. James -------------------------------------------------------

There is a pkg for it on SuSE's ftp site for both 8.0 and 8.1. It works for the most part. The only issue I've had so far is that it doesn't like to do CD to CD coping for me. It says that it has no driver for my Creative 52x drive which I find simply stupid since it's an Atapi device. The only way I've found to copy images of CD's is to have the CDR read them ..make an image and then burn it with the same drive. Kinda pointless. Since I just got this Plextor 12x..I don't know if this is normal behavior. It seems like burning software under Linux kinda blows. I can burn CD to CD data disks with Xcdroast but not music CD's. And CDbakeOven just pukes on itself when I try to configure it. KOnCD works ok as root but when I give my username permission to burn CD's it just says that cdrecord has the wrong permissions and asks to set them correctly..which does absolutely nothing to make it work correctly. Seems like stupid to me to have to use 5 different programs to do 5 different functions. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. Every cd drive you use in context with burning of cd's has to use ide-scsi. (As far as I know.) I have the same problem with CDbakeOven. Fabian

Yes, they are both using ide-scsi but K3B says it can't load any driver for the Creative reader. Well, maybe once 2.6 comes out and we don't have to use the ide-scsi module anymore and Nero puts out their burning software things should calm down and should work a bit smoother. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. You don't have to use ide-scsi now either. The latest cdrecord doesn't need it. Use device format dev=ATAPI: cdrecord dev=ATAPI: -scanbus for example Anders

If you are using a Creative Labs CDR 4210 cd-drive you have bad luck. -> "http://www.fokus.fhg.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/..." Fabian

Yes, but all the drivers it has in it's db for ATAPI devices don't seem to be usable for the Creative.
OK, that's a pity. I didn't even know cdrecord used particular drivers for models, I thought that was just a cdrdao thing, but maybe it needs to now that it has internal ATAPI support. btw, about your question "why compile k3b instead of using the suse rpm". This may be just my ineptitude, but when I've tried to use the suse rpm for making backup copies of my DVDs, it has failed. My self-compiled versions work perfectly. I haven't investigated deeper into it, but I wonder if there may not be some function disabled in the compile, for legal reasons Anders

Ben, I think I might have figured out what you need to try. I did compile my K3b, because of some of the legal restrictions the SuSE version has to follow. When trying to copy a cd, I found as you, that cdrdao did not want to copy because of the settings that K3b had made for my Sony DVD and Acer CDRW. Everything was set to "auto" and both drives were recognized correctly. Where before you could obviously change the auto to generic-mmc for better results appears to be gone in the new version 0.8. Well, after doing a bit of problem solving, I find that it is still there and you can change the Cdrdao driver! It's a bit hidden now and harder to find. Go to Settings>Configure K3b>Devices. There you will see your drives correctly identified. Now right click on "Cdrdao Driver: Auto." There you get the choice of drivers! I use generic-mmc for my Sony DVD/CDROM and generic-mmc-raw for my Acer CDRW and now copying works again for me. Even did a cd to cd copy on the fly! Don't recommend it on an IDE chain, but it did work because of my Burn Proof. I have talked with the author a couple of times when using 0.7.5 stating the problems using cdrdao rather than cdrecord as the other programs use, but he assured me it works as well. He instructed me on the settings though to get the best results and warned that both drives, if you have two, must be set for the generic-mmc to work correctly. Be sure you make the changes in Settings>Configure K3b and not the K3b Setup. Hope that helps you too.
