[opensuse] smartd worry
Hello SuSE people, For the last 3 or 4 days I have gotten a pop-up from smart about my drive failing from high temperatures. This happens only once a session (6 to 8 hours) I ran smartctl and following is the output: EasyStreet:/ # smartctl -H /dev/sda smartctl version 5.37 [x86_64-suse-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED Please note the following marginal Attributes: ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 190 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 045 043 045 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 267229069367 What do the numbers mean? (Except the 190 Celsius of course, and is that an unexpected value?) Who can tell me what to expect. Is this brand new sata drive failing on me? Sooo, at that temp solder joints are giving way, bearings are probably stuck, heads are melting, and your smoke alarm is probably sounding.... -- Kind regards, M Harris <>< -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I don"t know all about it, but I can clear up the temp thing :-)
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 190 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 045 043 045 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 267229069367
It's a table... read it like this: ID# = 190 ATTRIBUTE_NAME = Temperature_Celsius FLAG = 0x0022 VALUE = 045 WORST = 043 THRESH = 045 TYPE = Old_age UPDATED = Always WHEN_FAILED = FAILING_NOW RAW_VALUE = 267229069367 So, the temp threshold is 45 C, and it seems to be running at 43 C. Not sure why it"s failing on that. Maybe someone else can step up and give a more detailed explanation? I'm still digging into how to interpret the output of smartctl. Well, thanks for the info, but keep on digging please, because I don't know where to start. If the drive were truly 190 Celsius I should probably be seeing flames coming out of the box. Seriously, would really like to know how to fix this. Bob S. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, it's running at 45, so it rings the alarm.

You could find out in the manufacturer documentation what the maximun working temperature is for that drive, but you might think about placing a small fan nearby that drive. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
