[opensuse] Problem with sound on OpenSuse 11.1
After updating the kernel to 2.6.27.23-0.1-pae #1 yesterday I have suddenly no sound on Firefox, Banshee and Amarok. Sound is OK on Mplayer and Skype. I tried updating Alsa but to no avail. I also did zypper up -t package with no particular result. What should I do? PS everything was working fine before, except that on occasion I had to close and re-open Firefox to get the sound working. Sometimes I also had to reboot Jean-Claude -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You'll find that the update you've done recently has muted the sounds, have a look at your mixer settings and see if one of them is muted. Regards Bill -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have experienced the same thing on several occasions but never quite got my head around the cause of it. Things I have done to resolve it are: - restarts alsa - force a reinstall everything possibly related to alsa A friend of mine had the problem of having no sound whatsoever and it turned out that because of conflicting dependencies (the problem with running a factory respository) parts of alsa had been uninstalled, and he needed to reinstall them.

For this an easier solution might be to simply restart flash (as I assume that's where the sound is coming from): open the task manager (Alt+F2), kill npviewer.bin, reload the page with the flash on it. If npviewer.bin is not there, you are probably using a different plugin (VLC? Totem?) to view the video and you need to restart that.

Good luck!

Thaks a lot. I googled to find out how to restart Alsa then did rcalsasound restart in a terminal window and everything works!! :-) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I shouted victory too soon :-( When I reboot I am back to square one no sound in Banshee, Amarok or Firefox, everything fine with Skype and Mplayer. If I then do rcalsasound restart sound is OK with Banshee, Amarok and Firefox but not in Skype where the USB device of my external webcam is no longer seen. I tried closing Skype and reopening it but to no avail. If I then reboot everything OK again with Skype but no more sound with Banshee, Amarok and Firefox. If I do rcalsasound restart we are up to a new round...... ;-( -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Anyone can help ? No help from me but you are not alone. I have the same kind of problem with Skype having no sound after a restart but my prolink TV card works. After having been busy working on my computer sound on Skype very often is gone. I have the 26.27 .23 -0.1 default. I thought it may have been my Kmix but after deleting Kmix and only using Alsamix I still have the same inconsequential behavior. Still trying to pin down the problem and for the time being just using alsaconf or rcalsasound restart. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
